Contract buy outs?

I'm half way through a 24 month contract with o2 and I have been told recently about other companies buying your contract out for you to go over to them.
Has anyone else heard of this?
If you have heard of it could you please explain how it works - thank you.
I have called O2 retentions to see if I can re-negotiate and I was advised about changing the tariff, but I think I ended up worse off.
I now know I didn't negotiate myself a very good contract at the beginning, I'm not a techie person so just about understood the minutes and texts side of it and to be fair it was my first contract phone:rotfl:

O2 calculate your termination fee by multiplying the amount of months remaining by the monthly cost. For example 12 months left on iPhone 25 = 12 x £25 = £300
Why do you want to switch? Some people go with another company, sell the new phone and pay off the old contract and use their existing phone. Of course this only helps if you are looking to save money, or get a different package. If you want the new phone then you're kinda stuck.
I have seen deals where they'll settle a contract but I guess it depends on the cost and how popular the deal you're going for is. They're hardly like to settle your old contract and give you an attractive package if they can just sell to a customer without clearing their contract.0 -
I'm finding I need to use the internet more on my phone and can currently only use it for free at home or get charged up to £1 a day for useage.
I can adjust my mins/texts and add a bolt on but I do use the texts/mins.
It's not for a new phone, happy with the one I've got for now.
When I when with O2 I was told only 24month contracts were out there - for the mins/texts I wanted.
Can you now just get 12 month contracts?0 -

So your saying that 02 wont let you change your tarrif?
Tesco Mobile and Vodafone are now doing 12 months.
Another thing you could do it put your 02 contract into mothballs and keep paying the line rental.
Take out a giffgaff sim card (or other network) and use that
It would mean you would need to unlock your phone and would have to change your number but you could divert your old phone number.
That said, if its just the data that's causing the problem and adding a bundle will solve that Im not sure what the issue is?
What tarriff are you on now (mins, texts, data) and what do you need to be on?0
