I googled for pictures of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis and I am still in shock. I don't think I would fancy taking anything that can produce such an illness.

There must be more than 2 medicines available for Epilepsy? dmg24 do you have epilepsy and if so what do you take for it?

I took it for bipolar. I came off it because I can't manage my own meds (and my psych's answer to that is to leave me unmedicated!).

Speak to the pharmacist, they are the real experts on medication side effects. One thing to keep in mind is that these two meds are extremely common. If the risks were that great they would either be restricted to the most severe cases or banned altogether.
    Gone ... or have I?

I'm unconvinced that my advice has worked on this occasion!

TEN (s) [ Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis ] is a much more severe form of SJS [ Stevens Johnson Syndrome ] it is caused by common drugs .. .. equally it is also caused by an already underlying infection or malignancy. As others have stated common current use drugs [ Ibuprofen & Pcillin ] can case it. Its the incident rate that counts, its like refusing to use spectacles because they spoil your looks then getting killed by the bus you did not see coming.

  • without discussing individual drugs or attempting to give medical advice(as mse rules sensibly state we must not do),i would say that having had uncontrolled epilepsy for 13 years and having tried most of the avaliable medication,as mono and or duo treatments, that the side effects of the condition are worse than the side effects of the tablets.
i currently take 3 different tablets for my epilepsy,i did try a very new one towards the end of 2009 and one of the stated side effects was possible suicidal tendancys, sure enough within 3 weeks i had taken a near fatal overdoes !

I do not think with the complexity of the persons Epilepsy that the condition should be being monitored and prescribed by a GP ??? I think they should be seeing a neurologist and I am surprised the GP has not referred them. I have taken more combinations of medication for my epilepsy than I can count and yes...some has nasty side effects...but Epilepsy can ...and sometimes does....result in death so really for me it not an option to worry about what the leaflets say. When you look at many prescribed medications for other conditions it will have extreme side effects...they have to mention these...even though they may be extremely rare. You have to weigh up the risks of seizures against the necessary medication. When my epilepsy began I was 15 ....the medication they put me on had numerous side effects, but the one that worried me the most...at 15.... "May coarsen the features" !!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

    OK,

I was diagnosed with myoclonic epilepsy 35 years ago, when i was 10 years old. I have been taking epilim chrono (sodium valporate) for 4 years or so now, with one lild side effect which resulted in increased metabolism i.e. I got hungry!!!!! I have also been taking phenobarbitol for the entire 35 years which is the main epilepsy drug. I am amazed your GP hasnt even considered this (if he has, you haven't mentioned it) BUT...He is doing himself no favours at all by refusing medication.

Just to make it clear, there is no drug that dosent have any side effect. They don't exist. If your GP dosent or cannot help further, ask your family member to be referred to a neurologist, possibly for tests.
