Carphone Warehouse - Have I got a contract?!

Good Morning,

In the past I have had quite a bad credit rating but over the lat couple of years have been building it back up and am at a point where I have a credit card with only a £500 credit limit and a steady bank account.

I applied for a pay monthly contract with Orange through Phones 4 U last Saturday and was refused credit. I then tried to get a contract on Vodafone through Carphone Warehouse. I phone CW last Monday and applied on the phone. They said that the vodafone system was going slow and would phone me back to say if I was successful or not. They phoned me back on the Tuesday morning and said that the contract hadn't been applied for yet and they were going to do it then. Again they said that the vodafone system was going very slow and would phone me back.

I phoned them back that evening and spoke to a girl who applied for me and told me that I had been successful and even did that thing where they take a penny from my bank account and put it back in. I then received the phone on Thursday and thought my problems had ended!

I turned the phone on and it didn't connect to vodafone so I left it overnight and it still didn't connect. I rang up CW who advised me that there is a slight issue and I need to visit a store in person so they can clear it up

My main question is do you think that this is a genuine problem? I have read online about someone else in this position and they had actually failed the credit check but was sent the phone. Obviously I'm quite annoyed that I have to go and sort this out and if they take the phone off me it could quite possibly be the most embarrassing thing to happen :(

Can anyone shed light on this before I go there today?

Thanks all

I would guess if they've sent the phone then you've got the contract. I am no legal eagle but I'm guessing if they've sent the phone in error then it will be difficult to take it back, or not give you a contract. How would they retrieve it for example?

I can answer this (still have friends who work for CPW), over the past few weeks, Vodafones systems have been awful to deal with, credit checks lasting hours and then timing out, connections not going through, connections taking over 48 hours to go through, an absolute nightmare basically. The store has been told not to return it and resell it but to call Vodafone and get it manually connected, if they can't (won't) do it, it will need to be escalated to the Regional manager. (Ridiculous if you ask me for a simple connection issue!) Sounds to me that you've passed the credit check, got the contac but there's been issue with Vodafone connecting it.

Oh my friend from CPW who I live with just told me don't let the support centre tell the store to do a return and resell and they should refer to the Managers Brief on Touch. They will know what you mean.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

I am having the same problem, passed vodfone credit check instore at CPW, took my new iPhone home and no service....waited the 24 hours and still nothing, called vodafone who have told me that there is not even a record of a credit check being done on me by the carphone warehouse, so now vodafone are doing it themselves and I am now waiting to see the out come, was asked to email thru ID which I have....just waiting to see what happens now.

If CPW ask for the phone back, then as the airtime contract has been refused by Vodafone, you will need to return the handset as the contract becomes null and void.

Did you pay CPW anything by credit card/debit card? Then they have your details on file and it is possible that they could put a second charge through for th handset if you don't return it if asked.

Also keep an eye on your bank a/c Direct debits for a couple of reasons. If Vodafone do process a payment, then the contract is in force.

Also, check CPW haven't set you up some Insurance policy DD which, even if you return the handset, may be overlooked. You may need to check a few times until the matter is settled.
