There are thousands upon thousands of indoor only cats or cats that only have access to runs. Indoor cats have an average lifespan of 25 years, outdoor cats have an average lifespan of 5 years. It's not safe for cats to wander. It cuts an average of 80% off their lifespan.

Sorry - haven't read any more, but as a vet nurse gracie, that is completely untrue!

Can I see a peer reviewed statistic for this please? 25 yrs - very unlikely, even with the best kept cat! Yes occasionally, but hardly average! Avg lifespan of an outdoor cat 5yrs - again rubbish! I have seen literally hundreds of cats live to 10-15 years, some longer - 90% have had access to the outdoors!

No, I don't have any peer reviewed stats for that, just 13 years of experience as a vet nurse!

    25yrs avg - as if!

As for cats not being a danger to members of the public, they are a danger to avian livestock, certain pets and bacteria in their excrement causes miscarriages in many mammals, including humans.

Avian livestock should be in an aviary. Which pets are pet cats going to encounter? Any prey animals small enough for a cat to catch should be enclosed - coz if the cat doesn't have them a fox or weasel will!

And please, its not a bacteria, it is a worm - toxoplasmosis - general rule is erm - don't touch an unwormed cats poo, and your laughing! IME most cats are wormed, and most people don't touch cat poo!

Wear gloves when gardening, and check the garden before letting your child play

And if you own a cat - worm it

It is a risk, yes but a very small one!

I will be sure to tell my dad that, and his cat died aged 13/14 years recently, a completely outdoors cat and active until the end, living on a busy main bus route.... :p Miss you Jasper... :(

also, to update, my other cat who was a pedigree we rehomed from a rescue - lived with us a year as a completely indoors cat. She walked off the windowsill one night across the chair and had a heart attack. Thankfully it was quick. She was approx 5/6 yrs old. Post mortem didn't reveal anything unusual except that she was a little chubby... :o:(
