Is this a phone scam??
I have been getting calls on my mobile from this number :
08000285085
But when I answer it disconnects. So on Monday I thought, as its an 'free 0800 number' I'll phone it back.
When I got through I heard 'You will be charged...' so I hung up immediately.
I have phoned my mobile operator and it doesn't seem to have charged me, maybe I hung up in time.
Does anyone know if this is a dodgy number??

Not sure if this is anyhelp whatsoever but if you "google" the number that called you, you do get several responses - this seems best of the lot below (Ive pasted the relavent text - it comes under a sub heading of "Blocking witheld numbers and Call Minder" so it may be worth contacting BT to see if they know anything about it?

"BT have needed to call me twice recently.
On the first occasion a Presentation Number 08000285085
was displayed - it came from their Newcastle callcentre.
On the second occasion OPERATOR was displayed
and came from their Indian callcentre."0 -
most mobile providers charge for most non-charity 0800 numbers
( I was told with o2 to drop the first 0 , as they are free with them)
The caller would not actually earn from your call cost.. although is likely just a call centre trying to upgrade your mobile
( you could call from a landline to check them out)Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
As payless says, mobile providers charge for freephone numbers, so the message will have come from them. Ring it from a landline (141) your number to find out what it is.
Putting it into Google in quotes with spaces in various places brings up quite a few results. Seems like a regular nuisance to me.0 -
I have just phoned the number.
Its BT trying to contact me!!!
Yes the original message about being charged must have been my mobile operator.
Thanks for all your help.
Its not dodgy after all.
I think I know why BT are after me now.

this is really weird. I ordered a landline online, see here for all that hoo-hah.. and got phoned back by this telephone number very quickly.
I then went back online to bt, and was told that this is not a bt no.!?
what on earth is it then? and more importantly, how did they know what I'd only half an hour ago talked to bt about (online)0 -
For future reference it is an automatic sort of "thank you for your order" number. It rung after i rung BT and went ex directory.0
