The Worlds Gone Mad

I am returning a parcel to Argos and receiving two from Sainsbury's, both scheduled for today.
A delivery van has just arrived and the driver said he was collecting the parcel for Argos. I went to the garage to get the parcel and he went to his van. He returned and said he would leave it until this afternoon because he has just realised he has two parcels for us for Sainbury's. I looked at him and asked him if they were on the van now, he said they were. I told him that's ok, I'll take them now. He said he couldn't do that because we were down for a PM delivery, it was 1030am. I laughed and said "Yeh right, I'll take them now." He replied, with a very sullen look and nasty tone " You wanted an afternoon delivery and that's what you'll get." I said "Are you for real ?" He said "I can't deliver them now because it isn't PM." I called him a lunatic and walked away.
I have spoken to Sainsbury's and they agreed it was ridiculous and would speak to the courier's.
The world really has gone mad.

He might have loaded the van in such a way that the parcels were unreachable unless all the ones in front had been delivered / removed.
If not, he's just a jobsworth moron0 -
That's a good point, vans are loaded so that the parcels are in order (otherwise it would take forever to do each delivery digging through them) but he didn't need to be so rude. And he could have tried to find the others.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
The driver was a c%$k, simple!!0

He probably gets paid for his time/ amount of deliveries. He thought he was doing a collection and a delivery and didn't want to cut out the time he would be paid for by giving you your parcels early. I agree is lunacy0

Actually, the driver was delivering the parcels as per the sender's contract. It would have been Sainsburys or the customer that decided that the parcel was sent out on a PM service. This is a fairly new service for most couriers and it is causing more problems than 9am or 10am deliveries. It is just as important from a contract point of view to deliver a PM parcel after noon as it is to deliver a 'before 12' parcel before noon. The courier will get fined or reprimanded for delivering the parcel outside of the specified time.
The mistake that the driver made was to not check his route closely enough. He should have noticed that he had a collection for the same address as a PM delivery and not done either until the afternoon. However, the customer should really be directing their frustration at Sainsburys, asking them why they sent the parcel on a PM service in the first place.0 -

I had a delivery from Tesco due and the guy rang me up saying they were not allowed to deliver early but he was 200 yards away and had nothing to do for 40 minutes and did I want it early.
Rather than abusing the staff it would be better to moct the system that they work under. Of course Sainsburys told you it was stupid, pass the buck of stupidity to the courier firm and not their own crazy rules they impose on the couriers.0 -

Interesting comments, one or two tongue in cheek, I hope !!
Just to clarify, the drivers attitude was the catalyst for my anger. If he had explained the reason why he could not deliver AM, and had good people skills, I would have joked with him about the lunacy of the situation. He was sour faced, arrogant and rude, so he very quickly made me angry. When he returned about 3 hours later, he just thrust the machine at me to sign, took my package for return, and thrust the receipt in my direction. I didn't say a word until he got into the drivers seat and I sweetly said "Have a lovely day."0 -
