unfortunately its a wear and tear item or a consumable if you like
i wouldn't go guns blazing seeing as dealer is being helpful but more looking for a contribution to the costs from manufacturer
not sure if solid flywheel would be a good move on an vauxhall insignificance

I don't agree at all SB.
    This is a standard disclaimer,

If the clutch is a gonner then the op has it to pay for, he can't guarantee how it was driven for the 1st 20 odd k miles even if that mattered.
To chuck in the DMF issue is purely speculative on the garages part. They could not seriously expect you accept responsibility for that on a car still under waranty.

Is it a 3yr or lifetime waranty? does'nt really matter here, but gives an indication as to how VX are covering the lifetime thing
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Hi the exact same has happened to my car, they are saying if clutch has gone its wear and tear. My car has done 26k and have owned it from new. What happened in your case?

I think cyclonebri1 summarises it quite well.

Clutch, tyres and brakepads are all 'consumables'.
    DMF isn't.

Much as I agree 26k isn't much it's also quite possible to burn through one in 26k if mis-used. Indeed if you ride the clutch habitually then 26k isn't bad!

After switching back from an auto I actually did this myself at one point and burned out a clutch quite quickly.

Now, I'm not saying you did, I'm saying that is their excuse and it will be very hard to prove otherwise

All car manufacturers have some serious issues with premature DMF failure. And some last 150K miles, while others don't even last 10K miles. DMFs don't cope too well with very high or very low revs. Their purpose is to make a diesel powered car more refined (they absorb a lot of engine driveline vibrations), and to allow smaller/crappier gearboxes (more cabin space).

£1500 for a clutch and DMF replacement? Tell'em they're dreamin'. Clutch, bearing and DMF parts wouldn't even add up to £500 on a Vauxhaull.

DMFs are quickly killed by a lot of town driving.

A few posters have been talking about the liftime warranty, that wont apply to OP as you have to have had car from new.

Knew someone that worked in vauxhall and said flywheels were a problem on certain models.

Your cars milage was above average for a 1 year old car so might have something to do with it.

    Best of luck with it.

For reference my Honda (before I owned it) did 111,000 on a clutch and didn't need the DMF replaced. It is perhaps time that the DMF was also recognised as something that needs to be changed... (logic below)

    Logic
These are HONDA prices... Clutch replacement £850 incl. everything
    Clutch + DMF = £2000

This is for a Accord (and obviously TDCI since its the DMF)

Most the the cost is the labour, the Accord needs a huge amount of stripping to get to the clutch!

Cost of Clutch is about £200 incl VAT
Cost of DMF is about £450 incl VAT

The Honda garage will do the DMF using a '3rd party' clutch for 1200 but will not guarantee labour costs but will guarantee parts. This is the SAME DMF .... (LUK) that Honda use but unless they charge £950 for the clutch they don't guarantee labour costs for the DMF.

Local Indy will do both for £1100 .... Also labour should be less for changing both (as part of the work is actually separating the DMF from old clutch!)

However the point is by the time you take off the clutch why not replace the DMF? Its 6hrs+ labour..... the two are stuck together.... and yes its more expensive than a clutch but its still considerably less than the labour cost (esp at dealer rates).
  • I'm not surprised your DMF has gone. You have a big heavy diesel and have done 8k miles in 2.5 years.

DMF's in most makes of car do not last if you repeatedly do short journeys or town driving. A couple of taxi driver friends have a Mondeo and an Avensis respectively and they replace DMFs every 30-40k miles.

On the contrary our household has 2x big diesels with DMFs, both of which are original - one is an 06 plate Vectra with 144k miles and mine is a 58 plate Laguna with 123k miles - guess what, we don't do a lot of town driving.

You're going to have to pay for a new one as it's well out of warranty but go to an independent and you'll get it done for under a grand.
