Out of interest, is the later one any good? I have an IBM branded (but post-takeover) Thinkpad Z61M which has been a dog. I'm casting around for a replacement but Lenovo worries me.

At my work place we used IBM and now Lenovo machines i personally havent noticed any differences between but then again the factory hasnt changed just the branding name.

I was out and about today and saw a budget Lenovo in Staples - it didn't seem to be anything great.

Meanwhile, the Lenovo ThinkPads are quality gear. But beware of a couple of things: (a) they may change the spec of machines - a colleague and me have the same machine but his has a higher resolution display than mine, (b) the included fingerprint reader & password management program can be problematic - mine keeps prompting me to enter a password, but it can't handle the fact that I've changed my Windows one and so it doesn't match what it has stored.

I'm looking for the sturdiness Thinkpads used to exhibit but without the heat and reliability problems that have plagued my Z61. The trouble is that once you've got used to a Thinkpad, everything else feels so flimsy. If I thought the Z61 had just been a single bad model I could be tempted back, but I'm not sure I trust Lenovo to improve, rather than water down, the brand.

My (work supplied) Lenovo is a T500 - it seems pretty solid.
