Where can I report my ex-landlady?

I’m out of my tenancy and my useless ex-landlady is still withholding more than half our deposit. There’s no reason, she’s just full of false promises and the money never materialises. It’s currently going through the whole tenancy protection scheme process and is now with the independent adjudicator. I’m not that worried about getting the money back – I’ve submitted more than enough evidence that shows she’s a full of cr-p.

My issue is how annoyed I am at being forced through all this nonsense and how I can stop her from doing it to some other poor sod. Is there somewhere I can report her? I find it staggering that she can behave so poorly and not be reprimanded. From what I can gather she can be as rubbish as she likes and nothing will stop her continuing to rent to new tenants. Can nothing be done?

I suspect nothing at all can be done, if she is a member of a trade body then maybe you could report it to them but most are toothless and won't be able to do anything.

I think you have already done what you can, with the deposit protection people, you will just have to wait their outcome.

If she loses, she might not try it on again in the future.

    Hiya :)

We have a board that specifically covers housing and renting which may be able to help you with this one, so I'll move your post across there...

    Good luck :)

Was it held in a scheme?

HMRC is always good for a giggle if you think she's not declaring it. If she rents without the mortgage company knowing that's also naughty of her.

I'm sure the local council "private renting" dept (or similar name) or TRO's (Tenant relationship officers) would be interested.

Yup, write HMRC a nice letter explaining the income she's been getting: I'm sure she'll have been declaring the income...

If you pay £4 to Landregistry
    http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/
(Look up the property & get copy of the deeds)
you can find out who her mortgage (if any) is with & let them know she's renting: If her address with Land reg is the property address she probably won't have been entirely honest with mortgage company. I'm sure you find no problems..

Some interesting ideas above though the OP has given no indication the landlady is a benefit cheat, a tax evader, is in breach of her mortgage agreement (assuming she has one) or has broken any law. All we know is she has withheld some deposit money for an unexplained reason.

Which is being dealt with in the appropriate way by the deposit scheme.

From what you describe, you are having a dispute over deposit deductions, which is being dealt with by a deposit scheme adjudicator (indicating that your LL has complied with deposit protection requirements). Both of you are fully entitled to hold opposing opinions and you cannot 'report' someone for disagreeing with you, however much you feel you are in the right.

You are fortunate, in fact, that the LL has agreed to settle the dispute via adjudication. If she hadn't agreed, you would have had to pursue a county court claim which could take around six months to settle.

I waited five months for the independent decision on the protected deposit challenge.
How long have you been waiting?
