thats the trouble a lot of charity shops have overpriced themselves, and what annoys me is when you've taken items in and don't even get a thank you. When we got rid of DDs pram, (mothercare and had cost over £300 new) we brought it 2nd hand from my mate, it was like new, when I asked in one shop if they wanted one,(explained why it was in the car) this one lady moaned at me for not getting it out of the boot for her to look up. I'm stuck on crutches, so it would have been almost impratical to get out, put up and then down again. Went to the next dr charity shop explained it was in car and why, they snapped my hands off for it. So now we don't donate to the 1st charity shop. I know a lot of staff are volunters, but please and thank you doesn't cost a penny. xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0

"If you say so. I'd love to know how exactly they try to 'avoid' giving you £15 change exactly"
By saying thank you very much and closing the till, then claiming I had given them a £5 note. Fortunately the customer behind me and seem me give them the £20 note and the till count revealed far more than £15 over. After this another customer told me that they were known for doing this.
"Ridiculous. Tarring goodness knows how many thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of shops across the country with the same brush. A sweeping generalisation if ever ever I heard one."
Not really, simple statement. If ANY shop is customer friendly and well priced then it will get more custom. Most of the charity shops round my neck of the woods are over priced and very rarely have more than one or two customers in. The one that does is still overpriced but less so than the others, and the staff are lovely. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
I gave a lot of stuff to a charity shop recently, all decent stuff M&S, Jaegar, etc. Made sure it was washed / pressed / dry cleaned / buttons replaced etc. Some been worn once or twice.
If I saw ANY of my stuff in that shop for 50p or that level, I would NEVER give again !!
I'm not a snob, but I want to know its getting a good price for the charity. If I thought it was getting 50p, or was getting given away freebie, I'd tip it instead!0 -

Surely 50p to a charity is better than you tipping it for nothing and causing more problems for the country????
Madness if you say noThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

We have a local CAP charity (christians against povety) shop and it is VERY cheap! I've also been known to tell them to put their prices up a pound or two on some items. xSlimming World Challenge 2017 0/30.5lb

as a small business advisor in my "real job" i see a lot of help being given to so called charities.
however if you actually look at some charities you will see that little or in some cases none of the income from the shops or stalls go to actually help the cause in real time.
in other words the board (all or most paid employee,s) consultants (from £100 a day) head office staff it, admin, telephones, the you have store management, admin and costings.
most charities myton for example run the retail arm as a seperate entity and it as a whole gave 3.1% to the main myton hospice charity in 2009 (accounts available as they are a ltd charity)
another example is i helped a local scout group out with some advise after being called in to advise them on there fundraising i was horrified to find over 13k in a high interest account and there general fundraising sponsered this and cake stall etc bought in over 1k a month yet they still wanted more there outgoings where 250 a month (go figure i gave up)
so sometimes look beneath the surface of the so called charities and check what they actually do, if you want to check out one of the worst (im gonna get flamed for this) check out help for heroes the board get a bigger payment than some large business boards0 -
In my nearest big shopping centre there are many many charity shops - BHF is a particular favourite charity of mine for family reasons but I cant afford to shop in there. Instead I find Oxfam is fantastic for books - I read and give straight back. Its a Uni city so theres lots of text books available but BHF rarely price them competitively.I don't know if I'm getting better or just used to the pain.
