Overheard from out the back of a BHF shop when looking at the overpriced DVDs:

'Some fat *$(@ came in asking if we had any size 22 clothes in. Told her we don't get things that big. Honestly, this is the BHF - if we're going to sell clothes for fat slobs, we may as well have cigarettes by the till'

    Haven't been back since.

I am sure that is true of many. Just some are run as businesses and therefore unfair competition. A while back a local council sent trading standards to charity shops as they were selling new goods. At the time (don't know if its the case now) if they sold new goods then they had to pay full rates.

The problem is if charity shops push other shops out of business then all that will be left in a town centre will be charity shops, estate agents and banks.

That sounds like our town but you forgot phone shops in your list

  • I have always bought bits and bobs from Charity shops. I noticed the prices were rising when the 'credit crunch' started gaining momentum. I think they maybe felt there would be more demand for Charity shop goods so started hiking the prices a bit. Most often they do still offer value for money, but I think they are getting wise to labels now and are pricing them according to that.
