Waterford to Dublin used to be at least a three hour journey, over winding roads and through every town and village on the way. Now we have a motorway, you can be there in 1hr 30mins - so less than half the time.

Madness how Ireland is the only country I know whose motorways have no service stations though. Totally bizarre.

    Actually,
The motorways now do have service stations

The M1 now has 2 service stations 50km apart, and I think there is plans to extend this scheme to the rest of the country!

Originally they didn't have them due to opposition from the already existing business and service stations just of the motorway and also our motorways weren't really long enough originally to warrant the expense of building them,, but what they did need was signs telling you the opening hours of the the "off line" service stations, and how far off the motorway they were!

Are you sure? The M1 as in Dublin to the NI border? We been on that road many times, most recently just a couple of weeks back. I didn't notice any service stations.

EDIT: Hang about, I think I've found it: http://applegreen.ie/locations/luskM1North I didn't notice it there though!

    Yes positive,

They were opened last year at some point (possibly September),
one near Castlebellingham and the other near lusk, I have stopped at them a number of times

There is alos one at Enfield on the M4 now

Don't know how you missed them, they used to have a load of sign posts telling you about them!
I highly recommend them, petrol prices are comparable to other local stations, and the shop, toilets and cafe's are great.

Ok thanks, I'll look out for them next time we're up that way. Although to be honest, the roads are so much better and quicker now, there's not really the need to stop like there used to be - ironically.
