Anglian water hell!

I hope someone can help me.

I live in a cul de sac right at the end of a long shared drive.

Our water always tastes of really strong chlorine. We have been arguing with Anglian water for four years about this.

I have had a chlorine filter fitted to the kitchen sink (at my own expense) and it still tastes and smells a lot.

AW came out to test all my appliances saying It was the wrong pipes etc fitted to the washer/dishwasher etc. I had all these changed to the only ones they recommend and still the same.

I have had them out six times to test the water. When the man comes he runs the tap for 5mins before he takes the sample. I pointed out that that is not how it should be he said "everyone runs the tap for a few minutes first" Not in this house we can't afford it!!!

"so your advice is to let the tap run for a few minutes first to get rid of it is it" I said "yep" he said. The tests have come back every time within the legal limits.

Now there is a long feed from the main water supply up a long shared drive. I think the problem is the water sitting in the pipes as the neighbours mostly work away. Could this be the issue? When speaking to complaints two years ago they came and flushed the feed up the drive and the water was fine for a couple of weeks. But they said this is our issue!! and now they deny this would cause a problem.

So state of play now.

We save as much water as we can. One bath a week for me and the other days I have showers, with widget saving device fitted. Blocks in loos and A rated machines. The water is filtered then put in a glass jug and put into the fridge as this makes it a little better. we have two large water butts in the garden.

We are paying £50 month in water and this is about to go up as we have not paid enough.

How can I save when they are telling me to run the water before each use?????????

When I lived in the previous house we had a slight chlorine problem but it would only happen every couple of months or so. There is always a van and people messing with the drains at the sub station round the corner.

Is anyone out there a water saving/problem solving guru??? please advise me xxx

Do you have double check valves fitted to your appliances and outside tap ?

It could be the water reacting with the pipework, is it old pipework inside your house , is it a lead supply ?

Do you have any flexi pipes fitted , if so they need to be WRAS approved otherwise they can contaminate the water

"Chlorine/TCP tastes and odours are often caused by rubber components within internal plumbing systems or from flexible supply hoses on appliances"

I don't know where the OP lives exactly, but I definitely agree about the smell & taste of the water provided by Anglian Water in my area.

I'm originally from ooooop north, and find my tap water to be undrinkable....it tastes like a swimming pool.

I can't help with your issue I'm afraid, I just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one that thinks that way.

Did Anglian Water leave you with a compositional breakdown of contaminants in your supply?

According to the World Health Organisation, there should be 2.0mg of chlorine per litre of water.

Any less than 2.0mg/l and the water isn't properly disinfected. Any more and you can taste and smell the free chlorine.

spoken to different organisations now who have said it is something reacting and it is not chlorine. All fittings etc have been checked so it must be the long feed from the main supply which is up a long drive way. The only answer is to run the tap for a few minutes before each use which does not exactly sort my saving water/money issue. Looks like I will have to carry on filtering and putting in the fridge:o

Credit where it is due... Anglian Water publishes a very comprehensive Drinking Water Quality Report for each supply source..

Enter your postcode into this search engine: http://waterquality.anglianwater.com/map.aspx

..and you get comprehensive results like this...

So its not Anglian Water fault then is it

Did you check your fittings in the house are WRAS approved, if they are they should have a code on them you can check on the WRAS website
