How much SMA milk does your baby drink?

I would disagree that babies won't overeat. Admitedly not as a regular habit, but if your baby is hungry i'd increase the feed size slowly. When i first tried my little man on formula having presisted as long as i could with purely breastfeeding, he was so hungry and used to getting not enough that he drank the whole bottle instantly, then threw it straight back up again! I learnt from this and went for smaller portions. He was feeding every 2 hours, but it suited him. If i increased the amount of milk it didn't make him last longer, so as someone else said, increase it slowly and stop when baby leaves a little bit of milk in the bottle. Its a learning process.

    Good luck!

Our month old weighs a bit over Nine Pounds and is on the SMA gold top tins of milk. It works out that he goes through about a tin a week.

That works out around seven feeds of four ounces every day. He is quite a big baby for his age. Sometimes he'll put his hands in his mouth and have a moan not long after a feed. Does this sound too little? We don't want to overfeed him but i'm worried he is in pain from not getting enough milk in?

He also has a couple of four ounce bottles of water a day.

So in summary. 9 Pound 3 ounce baby is on SMA gold top powder milk. Currently drinking 7 feeds of 3 ounces a day. Does that sound... Well... Normal?

The amount he is feeding sounds about right. I do have to agree about the SMA milk though - it made my daughter uncomfortable after feeds and constipated. We used aptamil with no problems. (baby in the house is breastfeeding right now so don't know whether it's changed or not since)

It doesn't even seem like he is a big baby for his age - 9lb 3ozs is about 4.18kg - if you look in his red book that lies just above the 25% line - meaning that, on average, just under 75% of babies are bigger than he is. TBH it doesn't sound like he is still hungry, it sounds like he has trapped wind or is after some comfort.

I would also stop offering him water unless you have a reason to do so? If you're worried - call your health visitor. Thats what they are there for and no disrespect to anyone else who has replied, they probably know more, can come out and see you if necessary and advise from what they can see.

Do you have an issue affording the baby milk and that is why you are eeking out his feeds? If so you might be eligible for help with powdered milk - see Healthy Start. Also agree (as a retired midwife) cut out the water. If the bottles are made up correctly then there is no need for additional water at 1 month.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Sounds about right, I think my one was on 4hour feeds at 4oz at that age (but usually drank about 3 1/2 oz) when they start emptying the bottle, I'd start adding in another ounce.

I used SMA gold and was perfect for us, 4 hourly feeds, no colic, no reflux, no runs, no constipation.

    Every baby is different :)

if your baba has trouble bringing wind up like mine - gripe water. Its my new saviour and if it were a religious icon, I would worship it;)

Or what i have done with my older 2 boys when they were struggling with wind, is to give them water that had been boiled then cooled until it was tepid and give them a teaspoonful and the burp would be almost instant lol

I got that wrong about the water. Speaking to my other half, he has water maybe once every other day and it is only two or three ounces. No wonder it sounded ott!

My 10 day old son is taking 5oz every 3 to 4 hours during the day and every 6 hours at night. Was concerned, this was too much and midwife explained to keep up with his demands and he will adjust accordingly.
