How much SMA milk does your baby drink?

Options
Our month old weighs a bit over Nine Pounds and is on the SMA gold top tins of milk. It works out that he goes through about a tin a week.

That works out around seven feeds of four ounces every day. He is quite a big baby for his age. Sometimes he'll put his hands in his mouth and have a moan not long after a feed. Does this sound too little? We don't want to overfeed him but i'm worried he is in pain from not getting enough milk in?

He also has a couple of four ounce bottles of water a day.

So in summary. 9 Pound 3 ounce baby is on SMA gold top powder milk. Currently drinking 7 feeds of 3 ounces a day. Does that sound... Well... Normal?

My 1 month old is having 4 oz every 3 hours but sometimes she can want it after 2 hours, Esp first thing in the morning and late evening.

  • Does he finish it off completely, or does he leave a little bit of milk?? If he is draining the bottle i would say try making up 5oz bottles and see how he goes. as for overfeeding, I was always told a baby wouldnt overfeed, and would stop when they were full, as 'overeating' is almost a learned habbit that comes later.

Just for a comparison (as much as possible anyway!) my 4 week old is breast and bottle fed-alternate feeds. Obviously I cant tell how much of my milk he gets, but his formula feeds I make up 5oz bottles, and he usually finishes about 4 1/2 oz of it.

Have you thought of asking your health visitor? But as a rough guide its 125-150 ml per kilo of body weight and then divided by your 7 feeds so that's just under 90 ml or 3 oz per feed and so sounds totally normal, but any doubt ask the HV.

Why the water btw? Just wondering if it's because of constipation as sma has a bit of a reputation for that.

For the first two kids they got through about a tub a week which at a tenner a shot wasnt cheap.

Number 3 appears to have a dairy allergy - well wife thought so after a couple of days of vomiting and googling her way to mumsnet.

As a result GP has put him on prescription non dairy babyfood.
    Saves us £40 a month!!!!

Promise never to moan about mumsnet again....

If we ever give him five ounces he never finishes it, which wastes a fair bit considering you can only keep it in the bottle two hours.

The occasional water helps with his wind i'm told

ironman, have you thought about the Hungry Milk? We had our boy on SMA Hungry Milk at just over a week old as he never seemed full. Its still 4 scoops/4oz for a 9pounder, you might fight it satisfies him more?

(we changed to C&G Comfort though almost 2 weeks ago as he has trouble bringing his wind up and was very colicky)

That sounds like too much water if Im honest, and this is probably why he isnt finishing the 5oz bottles that you make up.

SMA is not one of the better milks IME.. My oldest had 6oz bottles of SMA every 1.5 hours and screamed for more we switched to Farleys/Heinz and he managed 4oz... and settled for 2-3 hours.. it was the difference between skimmed and full fat milk in consistency.

I'd try a different brand next time you buy some TBH.

If they drain 2 or 3 bottles in a row then you should offer an extra ounce from then on was pretty much the gauge I was advised. If they leave some they are full.. if they drink every scrap they might not be.

Hungry baby milk is not meant to be given to babies under 6 or is it 8 weeks btw, I tried cow and gate, sma and aptimil and in the end my preference was for aptimil, cow and gate seemed to cause the runs constantly, sma caused constipation but aptimil seemed just right. But I guess different babies might suit different formulas.
