Is it worth spending money on a foundation primer?

I started a full-time job recently, so I'm wearing make up all day and my skin is putting up a fight! I've swapped my foundation to a moisture based one and already I've noticed a difference, so I was just wondering if using a primer under my make up would be worth while or not?
So if anyone uses a good one that they could recommend, I'd appreciate it :)

It depends on your skin really I think. If you have oily skin and your makeup doesn't last long, you could try a makeup primer to see if it will will help it stay on better. I'd also say make sure you are using formulas which are compatible.. so not a water based moisturiser and oil based foundation. These formulas they do not mix and this certainly does not help the makeup stay on! Some people find that their primers make no difference to them, some people just use a good moisturiser before applying their foundation and find it works well for them.

If you just want to try a primer out, i'd say ELF Mineral Infused Face Primer is reasonably priced, cheaper than most and quite a good product. It is a silicone based primer as most formulas are and it's a bit like the expensive Smashbox one You can buy it from eyeslipsface.co.uk and there is a discount code available at the moment until tomorrow.. if you see this in time! BOUNTY20UK £10 min spend though. They do some good brushes in their studio line too if you are looking for makeup brushes, and the eye brightener quad eyeshadows are a snip at £1.50!

Hope this helps a bit! :)

The silicone based ones are really for people with dryer skins and/or wrinkles the oil absorbing ones are based on milk of magnesia to absorb excess oils, I recently bought some ELF brushes and I would say what a waste of money (HATE that) even though they were cheap, theres a Boots glitch atm on Ruby and Mille products in Boots, even though they are still full price on the shelves they are scanning at roughly a quarter of the price as I believe the brand will no longer be available in store shortly, OP if your new foundation is working for you I would be inclined to stick with that unless you have a particular problem and need extra help, you dont want to overload your skin, good luck in your new job:)

I have to put in my 2p here and say if you have oily or combination skin, just put some milk of magnesia on a cotton ball and use that instead of primer. I actually read that on here I think and went out to get some...and it really works!! I have combination skin so just put some on my t-zone - it really helps my makeup stay on and combats the shine.

They can help your makeup to hold longer, but unless you have problem skin, such as red/shiny/dull skin, or large pores, don't bother - you won't see significant enough a difference to warrant the spend.
  • I have oily skin, prone to a bit of redness. I've been trying out the Boots 17 primer and finding that excellent for keeping foundation in place and redness down. Still get a wee bit fo shine but just been taking that away with powder/blotting papers.

I was introduced to milk of magnesia as a primer by glowgirl (think she's on commission ;)). Definitely works for me, very MSE as well. I had a trial size of a Clarins one and that was rubbish in comparison to MOM.
  • I wouldn't say I have problem skin, just skin not used to having make up on everyday... so perhaps its not worth buying a new product if there will be no difference.
I haven't heard of milk of magnesia before, where would I buy some from?
    Thanks everyone :)

You'll get Milk of Magnesia in any chemist and most big supermarkets - its an indigestion remedy - usually in a blue plastic bottle - like this
