  • Chicken, mostly because its one thing we refuse to compromise on and will only buy organic :o
We used to have roast chicken once a week and had one meal and then the leftovers would go in DH lunch box (and a little bit into the cat:D) and I've always made stock from the carcase, now we have it if I find a reduced one but its still £7-£8 and I make it do two meals. (although a little does still go into the cat:D)

fruit. just bought 2 lovely huge 400g plus bags ofgooseberries from a neighbour down the road with an allotment for #1 each. Id rather they had the money than Tescos and Mr T charges over twice the price for them..They are lovely ppl we are quite friendly with them. They have chickens and birds and sell bread, jams, chutneys, cakes and take orders for Xmas puds etc.You often see them in Mr T buying only bread, flour etc.. :)

Just about everything apart from bus fare. I don't have a job yet so mum gives me money for the bus and coz everything's more expensive she has less money to give me. Luckily for me I now have a card which entitles me for £1 bus journeys :) but apart from that I don't really spend much apart from a bottle of flavoured water if I'm really thirsty. This forum has changed the way I think about money, I used to waste nearly £5 a day at college but now I spend about £1 a day :)

Hi willow, i live in staffordshire too and i think that £1 bus thing is brilliant, my 2 kids will be using it.

i think i can even use it for my son who is probably going to go to a school 7 miles away as opposed to paying £4.50 for the school mini bus!

As an aside, and so I don't get depressed thinking about the things I can no longer have, what I can do is help anyone out here who has the same problem.

Once in there change everything to English UK including the default language and keyboard.

:D:j:D OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS! My Dad's keyboard is set like this from the time he got it and it drives me nuts whenever I visit and "borrow" his PC and now I know how to fix it!

it's unwise to dwell on what you are not buying but rather be glad of the knowledge you have gained to get a bargain and made life easier.

I do get a hair cut at my local college, drive a kia picanto and buy lots of yellow stickers and 2nds in the supermarket.

I do live in one room for the minute but only so I can save for a deposit on a flat.

There are bargains to be had, I have already been to superdrug and found 20p toiletries for gifts.

my car is my pleasure, even if i only drive for 30 minutes a day. I am prepared to do overtime and even if I got a windfall, i doubt i can change.

it's how you look at life.

What a nice post, and so true. It's good to count one's blessings, and there is much evidence of that on the OS board. :)

Sausage,Bacon & Eggs..If you go & buy a branded make, you're looking at around £1.50 for a pack of 8 pork sausages & half dozen eggs & nearly £2.00 for 6 rashers of bacon.
Throw in a pack of Scotch Pancakes & Tatty bread, there's another £2.00..Black & White pudding another £1.50.Add mushrooms, beans & tomato & you're looking over £8.00 to make the family Sunday Ulster Fry..
I've now found that Tesco do a brill fry pack (soda, tatty bread & pancake) for 2 people which is about a quid.I buy 10 local eggs from the greengrocers for a quid, pack of bacon off-cuts (the rashers that are too thin, thick or mis-shapen for the mainstream packs) for a quid a pack & my butcher's sausages (which are more expensive than bog standard ones).
It's the little things like this that I think affect us most. It's not until you add up the cost you realize how much it costs,a fry for a family of 4 must be one of the more expensive meals that, ironically, you can get in a caff for pence..
