laptop for use in Dubai

Any recommendations for a laptop to buy for daughter who is going to work in Dubai?
She wants to be able to watch movies and use skype to contact friends

Pretty much any laptop will do the job (assuming she doesnt want to use it to play games). You could even get a netbook (approx. £250), though I'd recommend going for a laptop at around £350. As long as it's got 2Gb+ of RAM (or 3Gb if its Vista) and a fairly good hard drive (250Gb+ is ok, but if she will use it to store lots of films etc 500Gb is better) it will be ok - but remember to check for other things (for example, is it wireless? did you want a blu-ray drive?)

Unless they have changed their policy, the ISP's in the UAE do not allow the use of Skype or any other VOIP service, in order to protect their telephony revenue. Etisalat is no longer the sole provider, but the policy remains AFAIK.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
