Do I register my pup with kc (i have all papers) or the breeder?
Is there a timeline to register?
Many thanks in advance!

The breeder has to be the one who registers the pup - are both parents KC registered? Did they say why they hadn't registered the litter? You can register the dog on the KC Activity register but that's mostly used by people who want to compete with their dogs in agility/obedience etc.£2019 in 2019 challenge:£50/2019

What papers do you have?
Normally you would have been given the pups registration papers which shows his official pedigree name and number and that of his parents.
You then send that to the Kennel Club (along with the appropriate fee) to transfer him into your name. You don't have to transfer him - many people don't - especially if you have no intention of showing or breeding. Thanks for the responses. I have the papers showing the parental lineage but no mention of my pup. I was thinking about breeding, although not for a while. It is only a thought at the moment.0

You should have papers with all the Kennel Club logo on detailing how you change the name of the owner to yours - this can be done online or by post.
What sort of pup is it? I would say that you shouldn't be entertaining thinking about breeding your pup unless you have full health checks done, both to the pup when she is a little older, as well as selecting a stud dog that also has full health checks, does not have similar lineage to your dog, and is going to improve the breed.
Please please don't think that because you have paid £X 00's for a pup that it's easy money, it certainly isnt, and rescue centres are full of dogs that have been bred by amateurs thinking they will make a quick buck or two.0 -
Hope this is not the case but hearing a lot about pups being sold with what the new owners THINK are proper papres but are actually fakes....
As above, signing Caroline's post with both my hands and both feet....0 -
I just looked through the papers given to me by the breeder I bought my new pup from. I was given a large plastic wallet which contained, amongst other bits and pieces, the Kennel Club registration and transfer documents, a full pedigree list of lineage with hip scores indicated, copies of health checks for both parents with hip and elbow scoring results, feeding guide, care guide, grooming guide, 4 weeks insurance, vouchers for food packs and several leaflets on puppy care.
If you have not received any or little of this, I would suggest that your breeder is not doing her/his job correctly. and you may be buying a whole list of trouble with dogs being used with poor hips/elbows or other hereditory problems that will emerge at a later time. Nobody would want to return a pup, but you should be entitled to know exactly what you are getting, and it sounds as if the OP has been misled. I would be reluctant to part with what is usually a big chunk of money unless I knew about at least 2 generations back from a pup I was buying.0 -
Thanks Caroline-a. I agree totally with you. I would never embark on breeding my dog unless I had a full health check and discussed this with the vet and ensuring the stud dog has also been checked etc. Any problems then I would certainly never consider breeding.
Also, I only want to let her have 1 litter, I am not getting into breeding. I have enough interest from family members to have her breeding for about 5 years so will not be adding to the growing population of abandoned dogs. If I did breed her and everyone backed out of having a pup, I would end up with a much larger family!
The papers I have show the lineage of both parents going back a number of generations.0 -

So, it appears you only have a pedigree form and not the official registration documents? Are the parents KC registered?"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

Do your papers have the Kennel Club logo and details on them? I suspect you have possibly been misled about a non-registered litter...0

Is this the pup you bought before christmas??
The breeder should have registered them with the KC and the papers along with 5 weeks free insurance should have been given to you at time of purchase
If this hasnt been the case I think you can assume the pup is not KC registered and Im afraid you can not do it yourself
Reasons why the pup isnt registered can be because both parents were not registered and had the required health checks or the "breeders" were over breeding their animals and so any pups couldnt be registered
I wouldnt advise breeding from her because of this.If you dont have the health history of the parents to hand you have no way of knowing what problems you have stored up for the future. German Shepherds esp need their hip scores as hip displaysia is extremely common and can cost thousands to treat in later life0
