So can you access the Freeview EPG on the box?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

OK, there's a PDF of the manual http://www.superfi.co.uk/extras/Toshiba/DVR20-English-Specific.pdf

Timer recording is detailed on p33-34. Are you following this exactly?

With a DVD or Tape inserted -
In stop mode, press [TIMER PROG.]
Select “New Programme” using [up/down], then press [ENTER\OK]
Enter the date using [up/down], then press [arrow right]
Select the digital (DVB) / analogue (ATV) mode or external input AV1/AV2) using [up/down], then press [arrow right]
Select the channel number to record using [up/down], then press [arrow right]

Where is it going wrong? Describe keystrokes and which buttons you're pressing. Is this exactly the same as your manual?

Hi, We've been doing exactly as you describe: Date Start End Ch Rec to Mode PDC but the problem is with Channel number we're only able to get AVl or AV2 no channel numbers are coming up. I'm sure something has been put back in the wrong place but he's tried everything over the last 4 days. It's exactly the same in manual. I'm lost when it comes to TV's/DVD's setup and leave that to my husband.

So it's at this step that you can't select either DVB or analogue?

"Select the digital (DVB) / analogue (ATV) mode or external input AV1/AV2) using [up/down], then press [arrow right]"

    That's right. Nothing but AV1 or AV2

Many thanks to everyone for advice & suggestions. Pleased to say the problem has now been resolved thanks to a very helpful guy at Toshiba (who knew exactly what the problem was). It wasn't connected to cables or connections but connected to the dvd remote control. So we're back to normal once again. Thanks again to everyone.
