Old Electron Card

Hi,

I currently bank with The Cooperative, they upgraded my Visa Electron card last year but I am having major problems and can't purchase online from Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Amazon and some other retailers.

Does anyone know of a Basic bank account that provides a debit card that is accepted by these and other stores.

I can't get a current account due to past credit history.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Kate

    Hi Kate,

i assume your with The Cooperative and no other bank yea?

Anyway you can go with HSBC/TSB/HALIFAX there Visa cards are all accepted and worldwide they don't use Electron that is phased out now i think ? or still getting used? forgot.

or there is the natwest step account (im sure they issue a debit card or cash card)
    HSBC (Main A/C)
    Halifax Back up A/C
    Lloyds (Spending) A/C
    RBS Back up A/C
    Barclays Old A/C
    Nationwide Old A/C

Halifax still issue Visa electron with their basic account, so your best bet is probably Barclays or Natwest who issue Visa debit cards. Lloyds issue Visa debit cards with theirs, but their card can only be used in Lloyds ATMs for cash withdrawals

I've always been able to shop with Amazon using my old Electron card, and more recently, my Visa debit card when the Co-op changed it.

I still can't shop online at M&S or Debenhams though.

Look at Barclays or within the RBS group. Their cards are widely accepted. Lith, the OP was talking about debit card transactions rather than cash withdrawals

Hi thanks for your help for some reason on my home computer I'm doobadog not katie68, strange I must have joined MSE twice somewhere along the line doh!!!

I just received a rejection letter from Lloyds, in the letter they offer me a cash card account but it states non Lloyds atm withdrawals is not permitted.

I'm going to try Barclays I think.

What does annoy me though, is I have a car loan through Black Horse which I thought was part of Lloyds, that's the only debt I have from Feb this year and I never miss a payment. Otherwise my debts were all cleared last July.

I wish Halifax would get rid of the Visa Electron, I can't get a bank account with anyone else who gives a Visa Debit!! GRRRR

With their Cash Account, which is their basic bank account, you can only withdraw from Lloyds ATMs

You must have a normal current account

There are many people who use Halifax solely because of the Electron card to enable them to books flights with no surcharge. I must admit I thought it was being phased out.

Don't get me wrong, I've never had a problem using it on any online merchants, simply because it can be used as 'VISA' if 'VISA Electron' isn't in the list of cards you can use. I would just prefer a Visa Debit card as the Electron cards are tacky and embarrasing :/.
I've got no CCJ's or Record of Fraud, however I do have a couple of defaults and still have no other bank account options although I haven't tried Barclays yet. The problem is, most Basic Accounts are credit checking now so I'm stuck!!
