Can Orange customers get one for friends or do you have to transfer your existing number to the phone.0

I bought the phone for the betterhalf, who knows nothing about phones... Anyway, we transferred the balance of his old phone so he had just under £30 in credit (He only wanted it as payg.. as he can't use them at his work) Anyway, I was a bit disappointed to find that £10 of his credit vanished within 3 days, without him making a call or a text... He had been on the internet, but only via the home wifi... I phoned up customer services to find out why the balance was being used up (25p a call) and, as they can hardly understand what I am saying... they said they would transfer me to technical... so they cut me off instead... Another 25p call and they said that it was the cost of being connected to the internet... so basically, if my betterhalf so much as opened up the phone, it cost him.. They have now switched off the automatic internet access and offered me a few minutes of calls to other orange numbers, which I said was no good as I didn't have any other orange users... so I think they gave me £2 credit back on my balance... wow !!! ... since I was over £10 down... It's a shame there aren't warnings in the bumph about the costs of these services that are running in the background and that you would have to get orange to turn them off...
Sorry about the gripe.... I suppose I have also posted this in the wrong place... I don't know if it should be in the 'Techie' one or '...Was it any good?' section...

Glad you posted the above. I have been thinking of buying one and will bear this in mind.0

hey that happened to me...it appears that the gprs is enabled at default in the background...i rang the 0800 number and got through to an overseas agent who just about understood me when i started losing my rag to speak to tech...finally spoke to a familiar brit who disabled the gprs feature on the sim and credited my 10 pound top up back...i would try and call again as they can see that you dont normally access gprs internet on the account especially when you quote whats the point of me topping up in the future if this phone is gonna just eat out all my credit...despite that i love my new phone so thanks op.
just to say it is out of stock and i feel this may have been end of line stock as i dont see many of the leading retail outlets still selling this model.0 -

Thanks for this... I telephoned them back this morning... politely explaining to them how I felt.. and that I couldn't afford to lose £10 credit for some background usage... and, guess what? She is going to credit me with the full £10.. I wouldn't have phoned back if it wasn't for your post... Thank you again...:beer:0 -
i just ordered and getting it tomorrow! I transferred over to a £10pm contract and the phone was free, just a warning though the contract is 2 years, the agent on the phone told me they no longer do 12mth contracts, I figured it 2 yrs was fine for me as I have been with them for about 7yrs anyway! I was just too lazy to transfer to a contract. Looking forward to my new phone coming
Do I need to get this internet access thing turned off even though I'm on a contract now? Im unlikely to use it for internet anyway. 0 -

You should have asked Orange what the contract entails and if you get any data with it. Can't believe you've signed up for a minimum of 240 quid without knowing what you're getting.0
