Have I been sent the wrong phone?
Hi
I recently sent off my HTC HD2 phone for repair and after 4 weeks and 5 different promises of it being sent the next day it eventually came back. The shattered screen was replaced but the display is not working properly. The company claim to have done the repair and that any problem with the display must be a different fault. Despite feeling strongly that I am in the right, I do not wish to send my phone away again for a month with no guarantee that it will come back repaired!
I was just about to take it into another shop when I looked at the Serial and IMEI numbers under the battery. They are different to the ones on front of the box the phone came in.
The only problem is that the numbers stored in settings on the phone are the same as the ones on the box.
Why should there be a difference? Have they sent me the wrong phone? Could they have altered the numbers stored on the phone?
Any advice appreciated.

AFAIK, IMEI numbers cannot be changed legally, therefore you have a different phone.
You can check in settings that the IMEI in the phone is the same as that on the back of the phone (which differs from that on your box). Your operator should be able to confirm which IMEI you should have, do you have any paperwork from when you got the phone with it on?

Looks very dodgy.
*AFAIK*, changing IMEI is possible, but illegal.
Apparently for some phones factory reset restores it. Worth trying.0 -
2 things here... ok, did the repair place replace part of the casing? which may have had another phone's sticker?
OR was the OP's phone a refurb? in which case the same may have happened?

Thanks for alll the replies so far
Only the glass screen was replaced so now reason to have a different sticker.
Just to clarify for grayme-m if I didnt make it clear:
The numbers in the phone's settings are the same as those on the original box. It is the sticker which has changed!
Could they have changed the phones settings to those of my original phone but not changed the sticker?
Thanks - I want a water tight case against them.0 -

More probable is that they changed the case, and didn't change the sticker. I very much doubt they would change the IMEI even if they could.0

Sounds very odd. Did you check the sticker before you sent it is and are you 100% sure it matched when you sent it for repair?0 -
My hypothesis was that they took another phone and changed its IMEI number (illegaly) to your number while forgetting (or being lazy) to change the sticker.
It is not illegal for a manufacturer authorised repair centre to set or reset an IMEI in the course of a repair. Its correct that the sticker should match the handset.0
