I did put the DVD in my drive and rip from that, it was going to take 20 minutes but I noticed it was copying the same video_ts files, so I would still have to convert it back to avi which takes around 2 hours for a 2gb file.
Or are you saying once the files have been ripped to the computer, it would take less time to convert it, rather than converting straight from the DVD?
No, if you check your software you have some format options to rip to, like avi, mpeg, etc. just choose avi and you will be sorted.0 -
It doesn't have the option to select which output if I am just doing a back up of the DVD. The AVI option can only be selected if I select convert DVD.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0

This is what you need, it will give you a smaller file size to store on your portable drive, and the avi's will play on your pc or tv via usb.0 -
Inserting the disc into a dvd player when you want to watch them is going to be far less effort!!

I did say people would accuse me of being dumb.
No one's saying that! But talking of dumb ... did you hear the one about paddy winning £9m on the lotto?
paddy, grinning from ear to ear went to collect his prize winnings.
the man at camelot congratulated paddy on his good fortune and asked him how he wanted the cash.
"as a £9 lump sum, 3 instalments of £3m or 12 instalments of £750k, sir?"
Paddy replied.. look here, if you're going to feck me about then i will have my fecking quid back!0 -
Correct, but I want a back up of a few dvds so I can save them on to my hard drive hence asking how I copy a dvd to hard drive.
Do have a look at avidemux. It does all that you want and much more, and it's 100% free! I haven't yet found a commercial product that has as many features as avidemux..
http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
avidemux supports numerous encoding types for both video and audio output, as well as a range of container formats.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avidemux#Supported_formats
avidemux can compress to fit a user-specified file size, and it can also do batch processing. If you've got a large stash of DVDs to transcode, you could copy them all to hard disc and leave it running overnight.
