The movie that is converting now (from video_ts to avi) is 2.2gb and taking 2 hours, I'm sure it wasn't that big of a file before it was burned to DVD.

    What tool are you using?

avidemux mentioned earlier allows you to set the maximum output file size. During the transcode from the MPEG2 frame-based compression used in DVD-Video to the more efficient MPEG4 object-based compression, the video and audio bitrates are adjusted by avidemux to keep within that file size limit.

Transcoding can take a very long time, depending on the speed of your CPU, and what you are intending to achieve. You can sacrifice
quality in favour of speed and go for a single-pass transcode, or you can choose for a higher-quality multi-pass transcode which could take much longer.

The VIDEO_TS folder contains all of the files you need. The program is working perfectly. There is no such thing as one movie file.

Inside the folder will be files called VTS_ .... these are the video files If you have one which is called Video_TS.IFO give it a double click and it should run the dvd menu.

The other files are all the different chapters of the DVD

What I mean by one movie file is converting the Video_TS files back to the original AVI file, this would be more convenient to play the movies rather than scrolling through folders of each movie to find the correct file that will play.

To convert the files back to AVI is taking a lot longer than I expected so maybe not worth doing.

I am using Magic DVD ripper to convert one movie back to AVI, It's taken 1h 40mins so far with 15 minutes remaining.

A media player such a VLC or Media Player Classic will play directly from the folder. No need to look for the file inside the folder.

if they are copyright protected, you can create an image of the disc as an iso file using imgburn amongst others, then mount the iso on the pc using magicdisc and it will appear as a dvd

I'll be putting the movies on to my hard drive and plugging it in to the usb port of my TV to watch them. I maybe should have copied one the folders over from one of the DVDs and tested to see if and how it plays before converting back to AVI.

the video_ts files do seem to be more than double the size of the AVI files though so would take up a lot more space on my hard drive if I don't convert them back to AVI.

Oh well. An excuse for a beer or two! Is the DVD of something rare or personal or is it just that movie that Paris Hilton accidentally made in a hotel bedroom (you know the one with the night vision camera work)?

if avi files are smaller, you are losing something, possibly quality

No, nothing rare or personal - it's rita, sue and... I haven't seen it before and it's never on the TV!! :P

I'll just convert them on the PC that never gets used if it's going to take up to two hours for each DVD.

They were originally avi files so the quality shouldn't be affected when converted back? When I burned the avi files to DVD they were converted to video_ts files.. (I learn something new every day).
