If he's got no cash how you gonna make him give you something he ain't got?
Apparently he has at least a bike and a phone.

People have very different definitions as "poor as !!!!". Certainly I would say it's worth a go for £25 (although I would replace the light DIY anyway).
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

    And?

How much would that fetch at auction?

OP needs to do his homework first.

    Who cares?
He wouldn't have it after, would he?

I am both a cyclist and a motorist. If I caused damage to a car by what appears to be careless cycling (irrespective of whether or not it was charged as such), I'd expect to have to pay up. I don't see why the motorist has to be out of pocket, potentially to some considerable amount if loss of NCB is taken into account, because of my fault.

Might be worth speaking to the cyclist again and ask him if he has any household contents insurance. If so, that will cover him for personal liability. He may not realise this.

I was just thinking this. I had always thought if I damaged someone's property whilst cycling (or doing anything else for that matter) the 3rd party liability section of my home insurance would cover it...

Problem as I see it here, the OP could go and demand dealership repair prices.... Which will probably get over inflated with "oh there's a scratch too, it'll need a full respray... That's £500". When in fact it's just needs a £50 part bolting on.
You go to some guy who's originally said "yeah i'll pay" and then start demanding stupid money, he's gonna turn around and tell you to go f**k yourself.

You see it happens all the time and this is why people are reluctant to leave details these days, they're worried that the person will take the p1ss on the costs, demand a huge sum of money, get the repair done on the cheap and pocket the cash.....

My ex's neighbour did this when her sister accidentally scratched his car (she had just passed her test), he got a quote at £470, she paid up and then he got a mate to come around (we actually saw him) with some Tcut and removed the scratch for nothing!!! A month later he's taken his family on holiday

OP should have investigated properly, found a reasonable price for a DIY repair and THEN gone to the guy with that "quote".
“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Why one Earth should they? What is wrong with getting the repair done professionally? If the person who did the damage didn't want to pay dealership prices, they should have been more careful and perhaps a little more contrite.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

As I suggested in post 8. At the end of the day, why should the OP be out of pocket because of the actions of a idiotic cyclist? If he was reckless then he should pay the consiquences... simple.

^^ I think as I explained, if the damage is only the tail light then there's no need for specialist repairs and going at the guy with an overinflated cost is only going to make him think your taking the p1ss.

Me, I would call the cyclist up again to see if he would pay. He ought to pay but people avoid doing a lot of things they ought to do. Anyway he ended up in hospital and probably damaged his bike.

If he refused, I would fix it myself (about £60), forget about it and have a nice summer.

Of course if I was one of those people who liked to throw good money after bad and enjoyed taking time off work and waiting around in courthouses for a hearing, I wouldn't forget about it.
