I had a vectra from almost new a few years back, kept it for agood few years. Anyway the point being that the VX pads outlasted the discs by far ie the discs didn't rot they where simply worn away too thin by the pads that were still 50 good at 70K.

Not sure if that a reason to by or avoid to be honest, I know which is cheapest:money:

I wouldn't have ebc stuff given to me never mind buy it.The greenstuff didn't last, the turbogroove discs warped and the redstuff lasted 200 miles bedding in on the road and 30 mins on track before being totally worn to the metal.Maybe they've upped their game since then but I'm not giving them another chance after that.

Hi vickssinex , remember that the £130 includes fitting at main stealers labour rate of about £80 + vat per hour and parts department mark up on the price of the pads. There is a difference is the quality of the pads but for your average driver pottering around town you wouldn't notice the difference. If you were a company car driver doing 1500 miles or so a week of hard driving you probably would notice. I used to do 80,000 miles per year with 8 services per year and it make you realise how important regular maintainance is.

I use EBC on one car and Mintex on the other. Both of these can either be bought cheaply online and fitted for £10-£15, or I use a tyre place near to me who are about £5 more expensive for supply & fit. Ford wanted twice the price I ended up paying, and I got performance pads instead of bog standard. Brake discs can also be a fortune in main dealers. I now make sure my car is serviced before the MOT so I don't get caught out!

Too many fake boxes with these names on now to risk buying on line unless it's somewhere like buyparts or gsf.
I use dealer parts, Mintex, or Ferodo OE, and very occasionally I've used Halfords if I've been stiuck.

I didn't get on with greenstuff either, they were brilliant on track but I had a road legal track car, the 1st time on a sunday jaunt you hit the pedal in anger you had 3 seconds to wait for the heat effect to make them work, not good on the laundry front, (back actually);)

I wouldn't use them on the road either, I haven't found any that are good until they're warmed up.

I agree that safety is important, but to go back to my original post, this is Evans Halshaw that we're talking about here and I can't really believe a set of brake pads for a Vauxhall Corsa should set you back £130 - unless they're organic and made by hand or something!

Surely you don't need the overheads of a large dealership explained to you.

This leads to full retail being charged and main dealer labbour rates.

The independant mechanic isn't doing the job for a loss his overheads are lower and you will find that a lot more than you may think they are actually making more from the job profit wise than a large main dealer.

Vauxhall branded parts in a Vauxhall box are also expensive to buy.

Main dealers also tend to only fit previously mentioned Vauxhall parts.

When i ran a garage i made more on the parts than i did the labour, why is it that people see garages as theives when they make a profit on parts but then go to PC World and pay £500 for a computer whose component parts are worth a fifth of that if not less and you reckon you are getting a bargain.

I think they should make profit illegal, we can then fully invest in Camerons big society. And do everything for free.

I wouldn't put redstuff pads on a road car in all honesty.

Personally never heard any complaints about Greenstuff pads, used them for years even doing 70/80k per year when a courier.

I have never used the grooved or drilled discs thouh, a bit overkill for road use and noisy.

Money no object i would go for Tarox, but for the money i find EBC to be good value, haven't had mintex fitted for years, more due to supply issues than choice, but after using EBC pads i have stuck with them.

I reckon more people have brake issues due to not changing their brake fluid regularly than any problem with the pad quality.

road going cars need road going pads
as i said earlier up mintex for corsa best
a german company did a pads trial in one of the trade mags a few months back and they found during sustained braking the horses glue undid on cheap copy pads
i would NOT buy pads via the interwob
