Think of the cards as being of a vintage year........
"I think 2006 will be a good year for Chrismas cards. The minimalist design is contempary for the start of the 21st century, with a bold but subtle blend of colours emerging in multi cultural designs........."Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
I noticed the printed message on the back of my tesco cards today (as I was writing them out) and had a bit of a 'doh!' moment but decided not to worry what people thought about it - at least they're getting a nice card!0

Yes I agree that it's good to have family and friends to be able to send cards to and we shouldn't care if people are snobby about it, but some people do care. I feel that the real point raised by lizzie's original post is that it is the principle of the thing that matters.lizzie_dripping wrote:I bought some Christmas cards today from Tesco. When I got them out of the packet it has a statement printed on the back that these cards can be recycled at Tesco store throughout January 2007!
This mean that it will look obvious that they are leftover cards if I want to send them out next year, or buy reduced price ones after Christmas. I know that this might not bother some people, but there are many that wouldn't bother and just buy new ones.
I have not noticed any other companies do this with their Christmas cards - what blatant profiteering.
It is a cynical ploy by shops to make us throw away left over cards every year and buy more from them, so I think that as good MSE'ers we all have to resist this tactic. For those who've already bought cards this can be achieved by sending the cards anyway or re-cycling them and for those who haven't already bought any of the "marked" cards, they can refuse to buy from retailers who use this ploy. If I were Lizzie, I'd take them back, (in their opened state) complain and demand a refund (on principle)! I think there's a lot to be said for voting with our feet and not allowing companies to try and manipulate us. In future, my hard earned will be going to card retailers who don't get up my nose - thanks for the tip lizzie!0 -

We bought some cards from Sainsburys the other day and they have this message on the back. I must admit when I first saw it I never thought it was a cynical ploy to get people to buy the seasons cards and throw out their old ones, in fact I thought it was good that they reminded people to recycle the cards they receive rather than throwing them away! It would never enter my head to throw away cards that I had bought in the sales simply because they have a date on them.0

What!    Recycling I am all for, without a doubt, but recycling any 'I don't want anymore'. Surely this is suggesting that Christmas Cards have an expiry date! What rubbish.  I have to say that I hope I know no one who would object to receiving a Christmas card because it was 'so last season' and I have to say even if I did, suggesting to them that I bin (or recycle - it still takes energy to turn it into loo rolls) any cards I hadn't used would be, I hope, something that no one with any sanity would suggest. It's a nasty ploy – why don't the put on ‘Recycle at Tesco stores at Christmas ‘rather than the date! It’s unfortunately going to mean that some people will ditch perfectly good cards to keep people who think about impressing people rather than consider that Christmas is about goodwill. Wait till the Christmas lights can only be bought with the year in lights, then with a digital countdown, then go bang on 12th night!computerwoman wrote:the delivery man gave me a leaflet about recycling my used christmas cards and any that I don't want anymore ... I think it's a good idea that these big companies are willing to recycle things for you.
Take no notice of the back of cards people!:D

I agree with you all about it shouldn't matter but my original point is that some people will, rightly or wrongly, feel slighted about receiving an old card and then what's the point of sending it ? It defeat's the object - it's Christmas - I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings (don't want to at anytime of year - but you know what I mean).
My issue is with the supermarket - I feel sort of cheated as I thought I was getting a great bargain - don't know about all of you but a good deal gives me pleasure (probably very sad, but that's me ). Also it looks like another little bit of marketing on the big stores part to me. They obviously hope that people will react like me, but unlike me, won't attack the offending article with a ruler and black felt tip and send it anyway but will go and buy more. Also I feel stating on the back of the card that you can recycle cards with them is just another ploy to get people who might normally go elsewhere through their doors thinking 'Oh, we'll go to Tesco's (or wherever) this time because we can recycle the cards there'. Yeah, I know I'm a dreadful cynic but so are supermarkets and I bet I'm right - they won't miss a trick!0 -

I don't feel its something worth fretting about, but I think that beetrootjuicer sums it up well! I personally don't mind sending or receiving "dated" cards - but as I said in my post, it is the principle of the issue that matters. When it comes to consumer revenge, "every little helps!"beetrootjuicer wrote:I agree with you all about it shouldn't matter but my original point is that some people will, rightly or wrongly, feel slighted about receiving an old card and then what's the point of sending it ? and each of us needs to do our bit, being selective about the stores we shop in (and sometimes even taking things back when necessary). 0
