Artex, love it, hate it?

Got rid of all mine, and also recentered the light fittings. Just have some stippling now on the one room I've not changed. Hate it, prefer elegance to the Country Cottage look in my mid-70s house.0

Friend of mine at work (in her 40s) is having her house redecorated and specifically wants artexing all over! Yuck. Not my cuppa at all. She's struggled to find a decorator who actually still does it!

I had a hall and stairs (over 3 storeys) of the stuff on my walls. I decided it was coming off last winter and took a steamer to it. Hell of a job took me days just to complete one section of the wall. In the end I got a plasterer in and skimmed the lot. Took him 9 days with 4 bedrooms and a reception room.
Does look great now though....0 -
I'm in the neutral camp. There are more attractive ceilings but it's only a ceiling after all.
If you were doing something more interesting than lying on the sofa you wouldn't even notice.
I reckon artex ceilings are just another one of those decor things that people pretend to be horrified about to give others the impression they have good taste.0 -
I didn't realize that it was dangerous.
. Our first flat had it literally everywhere and I absolutely hated it as I am a bit pattern phobic so I bought a 10 litre tub of x Tex and worked my way round the place taking it back to the original plasterwork which was in fabulous condition. It was very hard work but totally worth it as it looked amazing and I don't think I was the only one to think so as when we came to sell it took less than 1 week!

Old artex needs to be encapsulated (skimmed over) you have a duty of care to tell any new owners you have done so so they can take precautions when drilling.
Its usually white asbestos, so you don't need a licence to work on it in your own home, just follow the HSE advice to the letter. Which is plaster over the damn stuff.
If it is in good condition and covered with paint there would seem little chance of any asbestos fibres becoming air-borne if left undisturbed. Have you got a link to that particular piece of HSE advice for encapsulation?0 -
