wow, this is a bit of a firestorm.
clearly the op is able to earn his own money
i may be able to, but my wife cannot as she is a student. her grant is paltry and it is not easy to support two people on one temp job, which can be taken away at any moment.

i came here to find out whether or not i am entitled to the tax credits i have been awarded if my income rises to £18000.

i chose this figure, not because i have a job that pays me £18000 but because if i continue to work in this temp job until april, that is roughly what i would earn.

as my contract ends at the end of august, unless i secure a permanant job in the sector i would like, then i will not reach this figure.

however, i wanted advice about what would happen if i did.

thanks to Kimitatsu for your helpful answer.

and to the rest of you complaining about benefit awards - if i am eligible to claim, i will claim, and they may or may not be awarded. if i am not eligible, i will not claim, and they will not be awarded.
So in order to avoid an overpayment you need to inform them of your projected income for the coming year. You are obliged to inform them within 30 days of a change of circumstance (which includes income) in order to avoid an overpayment.
i don't know what to do about this as i do not have a firm projection of income. it all depends on whether or not i secure permanent employment. do you have any further advice? apart from having a baby...

further to this, if after my temporary contract was up, andi hadn't secured further employment, i would notify the tax office, and they would stop my claim. ifi subsequently started working again, would i have to fill out another form? or is there a quick way to reclaim?

you wont have to notify them of any change in income, until such time as your circumstance changes (ie contract ends, claim JSA?), or you are nearing the disregard level (should you find another job). at which point your claim should be reassessed and you new entitlement worked out, and no overpayment should occur

once you are on the system, you are on the system, so its a quick phonecall to update details. you wont have to fill in another application form to start a whole new claim
