I wouldn't risk either of the options, if you suspect the battery is at fault and it's more than 4 years old, just get a new one. It's not worth the risk of battery exploding all over your engine bay just because your too tight to buy a new one....
How do I know? personal experience
Did you know that battery acid eats paint all the way through to bare metal?
If however the battery is fairly new then a top up charge won't hurt, but DO NOT try to start the car immediately after removing the charger!! You MUST allow time for the generated hydrogen gases (caused by charging) to dissipate.

Check post #17, only bought last year, but I agree It's likely knackered.
