Is this another reason why we should grow our own?

I think it is good to work towards growing our own food to what ever level you can manage. However having lost all the things I have planted so far either due to pests or weather I am well aware of the vulnerability of production within the UK (and elsewhere). That is why I think it is important to support local producers as well as making what additions you can to your diet from your own home.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Do we support local growers because we think in the future that world food transport will be compromised, that we will need the food locally?
Do we support local growers because we think that food travelling around the world is a bad idea for global warming/bad for the food/bad for us?
Or do we support local growers because they are a local industry?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Thinking about what you said Lotus-eater... for me its a mixture of all of them, but i think supporting local businesses/industry is one of the most important ones for me.... as i personally feel then the money is kept in the area, so in theory the more money kept within the area, the more money is spent within the area, so it should be a win - win situation.... but this is all in theory...:rotfl:from a food point of view though.. if there is a bad crop for whatever reason.... then you are pooped....and as consumers we are so used to having what we want when we want on the shelves...
I must admit i do worry about our food, even though there are high standard and rules and regualtions to adhere to, but we all know throughout history if they can get away with tampering with our food to make more money they will.Work to live= not live to work0 -
So should we support local growers more than other local businesses? And why?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Rummer said that we should support local growers due to the instability of world food production.
I don't know, I'm just trying to get to the reasons, that different people think we should buy local food.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Maybe it gives people a sort of contentment... knowing that it is local? an impression it is better quality? or fresher? or maybe just stems back to umpteen years ago, where most things were produced locally, and it makes them feel a community spirit? belonging?
edit... sorry but i had to go and watch that comedian on Britain got Talent...lol..
TBH i havent got a clue.... as i say maybe people are hankering for that community living, where its an injoyment to shop/buy rather than a choreWork to live= not live to work0 -
It would appear from latest reports that the outbreak has nothing to do with Spain. Or cucumbers. Infection apparently originated....in German water at a Festival.
It's just a typical case of the Master Race trying to blame someone else.

perhaps a wistful yearning for our hunter gatherer origins, where we could not eat anything that was more than a days walk away, where starvation was only a bad growing season away, and most of us died in agony, young, mainly from diseased teeth.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

I support local businesses across the board for a number of different reasons. In relation to food I am conscious that it has travelled less and has used less fuel. Most of our local producers are also organic which I appreciate and from a finance point of view they employ local people and add to the local economy. Small scale food production is hard work and demanding and I want to support their efforts.
In relation to global food production I think recent natural disasters and climate changes have shown how vulnerable food production is. To me this hits home the importance of growing food in a variety of locations, climates etc That means if one area is hit that we have options instead of putting all our eggs in one basket.
As for other local businesses I like the fact that they are within walking distance, provide a personal service and again are supporting the local community through employment and various other things.
I just personally feel that each little bit counts.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
