I saw my sons play today. It was Dickens A Christmas Carol.

However in between scenes, the children stood up and sang traditional Christmas carols, such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing, While Shepherds Watched, Silent Night etc. It was lovely.
Here I go again on my own....
  • my children attend catholic primary school and i have been to my daughters nativity play today and my sons is on thurs.he is playing joseph and i am so proud.sure to shed a tear or too.(baby jesus was present at both plays.)my friend who is a muslin is coming to watch my little man on thurs and is really looking foward to it.these plays are one of the highlights of the year for me as i am sure they are for lots of parents regardless of religion/race.

Sadly, my childrens primary has decided not to have a school play this year, as last year many parents [although not all] of a muslim faith, objected and removed their children for three days at the end of term.

On the 20th, the school will be celebrating christmas and eid in an assembly that parents are welcome to attend.

My girls are in juniors now, but I will still miss the infants play.

Why 3 days I can see they might not want to send them for that particular day, or them not participate in a nativity. Or do you mean as a protest?

Many schools celebrate the diwali festival of lights, but I wouldn't ask for it to be banned on the grounds I'm offended by another religion, nor would I expect it to suddenly be about pantos and jugglers etc.

Sons school is an infants, so only yr 2 do a nativity (so the kids are older and can remember their lines;) ). Nursery and reception sing xmas songs (not usually religious), yr 1 does a winters play that will have the nativity story in it. I don't mind this, it gives variety. It's the outright bans that I think are wrong.
  • As the director of our school nativity play I can say that the Christian story has pride of place and always will. However one parent said that she was so pleased that we varied the setting around it each year because "when you have more than one child you have already seen it once:eek: "

We are still required to have a daily act of worship (which includes prayers) and the children are taught the Lords Prayer. However please see it as a partnership, parents have a vital role in the religious education of their children. It recently took my class seven guesses to decide the holy day for Christians:confused: and then they were incredulous. If you do not hold your own religion in respect how can you expect others to?

They took the three days as a protest - including the muslim / somali parent governors.

Also, the governors decided that, as the majority of the school is not english, christian morning worship is no longer part of the morning assembly.

  • I don't see why Christianity should be foisted upon children in school. By all means teach about Christianity along with the other religions, but from a disinterested standpoint. It is not the place of a school but the parents to raise a child to a religion if they so choose - school should not be a recruiting ground for ANY religion. It is for opening children's minds to all possibilities not pushing them down a path.

  • I don't have a problem with an absence of Christ. Christmas is taped over pagan winter festivals, and christians seem to have absorbed the pagan parts into their celebrations. Let people celebrate how they want, and if Jesus gets left out & you want him back in, take the kids to church. :)

Fine. So don't call it Christmas then.
