  • No baby Jesus!!!!!!!!!! :-0
  • Well, I am so glad that I chose to send my children to our local catholic school (we're C of E), we have the full works re nativity plays, easter, saints day. Although my eldest ( now at the catholic secondary school) is a non-believer he does at least have the knowledge. The other day the three of them were even discussing what colour surplices the priest wears for different church seasons.

there's another thread floating around about this somewhere, but I'll put my two cents' in here too:

I'm not overly christian, but I consider myself to be English.

I wouldn't say I particularly "celebrate the birth of christ" at christmas, but I certainly enjoy the festivity and a couple of days off work.

This being the case, I consider myself to enjoy a "traditional English christmas" as I understand it, having been raised with them:

A Christmas Tree(with a fairy!), Santa Claus (with stockings!), Presents, Mulled Wine, Mince Pies, Roasted Chestnuts, Chirstmas Dinner (with crackers!), Cake! Beer! Wine!, Dickensian Evening, Decorations and, of course, small children doing the Nativity Play!

I don't consider any of these things to have anything to do with Christianity, but consider them to be part of my "English" culture and heritage. Anyone taking these things away as a result of religious differences I consider to be directly attacking my way of life as an Englishman and I hate it!

    Bring back the baby Jesus!
(or is it "baby cheeses"? I always get the two confused ;))
  • I went to a Convent primary school, so I have performed and seen just about every variation of the Nativity.

Surprisingly, I'm not religious but there is something very traditional about the nativity play in all its glory and I hope that one day I get to see my children have important parts such as sheep and stars!! :rotfl: I never got an "important part".
How long til pay day?

This reminds me that I went into BHS last week to buy Christmas cards and there was not a single pack that had anything to do with the the birth of Jesus.

I was so disgusted I wanted to complain. Might send them an email now actually...

DH, who used to be Jewish but is now Christian, has started binning any Christmas cards that we receive that don't actually mention Christmas.

One year I made an effort not to offend his family members and sent 'Season's Greetings' cards with wildlife pictures on. In return, his brother who is an atheist although he says he's Jewish, sent us one printed in Hebrew with little spinning toys on it! He came straight off our Christmas card list.

Those from America seem to be the worst offenders. 'Happy Holidays' is common, 'Season's Greetings' - if they don't actually mention Christmas they go into the bin.

It's very difficult to find any with a 'Christmas picture' on the front. The ones we got from church this year are sold in aid of NCH Action for Children (the Methodist children's charity) and the only ones with any kind of Christmas picture were the Three Wise Men following the star.

  • I've sent an email to BHS - I'll let you know if I get a reply. I read somewhere - might have been in the link that you put up - that only one in every hundred Christmas cards have a proper Christmas picture on it.

Would love to be a "Yummy Mummy" but more a "Slummy Mummy"!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
  • My dd's christmas play this year is Little Red Riding Hood. Whats that gotta do with christmas!
  • At my son's very multi-cultural infant school, the Reception classes tell the nativity story and years 1 and 2 tell a Santa story. Suits everyone and a very good compromise.
Have fun at your children's plays everyone. My son's play is on Thurday and he's a snowman. Always feel a bit weepy when I watch him - that's pride for you..
