Thanks Russ. I've just tried to burn a CD with something I downloaded. I really am so useless that the burn hasnt worked, and I now cant find what I downloaded!!!
I will ask my son if he wants to have a go at your number 4 suggestion. I'm sure he'll have an XP on disc, and this laptop has the sticker on so we should have a number for it.
He's so much more understanding and patient with issues like this....I will update you later with how we get on!

Thanks for everyones help. It must be so frustrating trying to tell someone who knows less than nothing how to do things like this which are probably really straightforward. I do appreciate your patience!

  • Watch this video tutorial, it's about how to reset windows administrator password.

Actually, when you forgot windows password, the first thing you should try is the default administrator which has no password in it, boot the computer into safe mode then you can use it. But we should know that windows 7 default admin is disable by default, only you have enabled it, can you use the tip

The second is try to reset the password with some password reset program like Windows Password Key, well being known by it's instantly reset lost password.

this sounds like an ex corporate pc? does it say domain at the login screen?

factory restore - google (or post) the model and factory restore, but if it's an ex work machine (which if acquired legitimately should have been wiped thoroughly before you got it), then the restore partition may have gone.

Does it have a windows serial sticker, you will need the same version of windows, ie possibly professional to reinstall

have you managed to get into it yet since its been about 3 months ;)
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
  • If you haven't managed to get in yet, I would recommend OPHCRACK. This needs to be downloaded and burned to disc, and the computer set to boot from cd first. If you can get into the bios you can set this, and then boot from the cd. The program does not remove the password, it just shows you what the password is, then you can reboot without the disc and enter the password to get in.
