There are too many variables to consider when comparing each others MPG, traffic, speed, anticipation etc. I'm confident 76 is a fair figure, I've always averaged more than what the official figures suggest.
There is such a thing as being overconfident, particularly when dismissing the word of people who actually own a particular car and have driven tens of thousands of miles in it and are therefore on pretty solid ground when they state what MPG the car achieves out in the 'real world'. :)

Now if I were to sell it and buy for example, a diesel Fiesta which does 76mpg, costs nothing to tax and only £500 to insure, I'd make a massive saving in terms of running costs.

A diesel Fiesta will not get anywhere close to 76MPG in stop start commuting traffic. Your problem isn't the car you have but the type of journey you're doing and you are going to be lucky to scrape 2/3 of advertised "extra urban" MPGs.

Its not all stop start, to your last point, I'm only 3mpg off the extra urban figure in my current car (32 out of 35), on a clear run I can average 40.
