Well 76 to be exact, I'm using the official figures across the board. Having been a passenger in a 1.6 TDCi Fiesta, I can vouch that even at 85mph they are still doing 65mpg, quite incredible. (90mpg at 55mph even).0

Do you actually need the car for your job?
Could you commute on public transport until you move closer, or lift share?:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
Not sure if it will appease the Op but you can get a new Peugeot 107 for 5.5k if that helps
Dont know how good they are though

I would definately have a look at the vrs octavia diesel, very good car that should hold its value pretty well, I would also consider the 1.6 tdci focus, can be had pretty cheap now and its a great little engine.
The fiestas are ok but I drove a zetec s diesel recently and it was unbelievably slow, I simply couldn't have driven it every day. I shudder to think what the 1.4 would be like.
I assume the st diesel mindeo is of no interest / doesn't make sense for you? Also a good car
What motoring wonder do you drive that makes a diesel Fiesta abhorrent to drive as a commuting car? We've got some 1.4 TDCIs at work and they're not that bad (and I hate diseasel with a passion)
Not going to set the world on fire by any means - but for getting to work?!0 -
I have a 2010 Fiesta 1.6 TDCi
After 17,000 miles from new I'm getting average 54mpg - lower your expectations as you won't get 76!0 -

There are too many variables to consider when comparing each others MPG, traffic, speed, anticipation etc. I'm confident 76 is a fair figure, I've always averaged more than what the official figures suggest.
My last Mondeo TDCi suggested 44mpg, however I consistently averaged 57-60mpg tank after tank.0 -

You need to remember that with modern cars manufacturers are getting very good at making cars which perform very well in the emissions / consumption tests, which have little relevance on reality.0 -
My ol' motor averages approximately 10 miles to the litre......often more....I guess that's around 45 mpg's...which I am more used to.
Sometimes I get over 50 mpg's...but I cannot get used to these litre thingies....we spend years fighting Napoleon so's we can keep gallons and miles...then everybody lets him in by the back door.....
Mind, I only paid around 300 NBP's for the car....so I guess around 13pees per mile is good as it doesn't include horrendous depreciation...No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Why dont you just buy a used fiesta 1.4 tdci and save a fortune?0

Right now the wonder I drive is a little mk3 mr2, which is unsurprisingly much more sprightly than the fiesta though hardly a rocket and does an easy 45mpg on a motorway run.
If you think the performance from the 1.4tdci is adequate then fine, from my own experience the larger engines diesel was pathetic. In contrast the same engine at 115bhp in the last gen focus was a cracker. The 1.6 diesel in both the mini and ds3 is also a good iteration. As somebody who is used to driving cars not dissimilar in performance to the st220 mondeo (328i, mr2 turbo, 330d) I was simply giving my view from what I looked at when thinking of downsizing.0
