One last point, I assume it's a smart phone, many check for updates on a timed basis, if she's got say email or Facebook set up to auto update data may be fetched without her knowing.

She needs to disable all mobile data services, how thats done varies from phone to phone. If she'd not sure how may be best turning it off and leaving the phone off unless she really needs to make a call.

I don't know if it's vodafone, or it's a feature on iphones, but when I go abroad all on line services are disabled unless I switch them on manually.

Thanks all - have just texted her to tell her to turn data services off or if in doubt then turn phone off and get a PAYG.....didn't you know that teenagers know absolutely everything and you can't give them advice because you're always either wrong or interfering??!!

Yeah. Have her turn off all data ASAP. Roaming, data or voice is extremely expensive out side the EU. My suggestion will be to just turn off the smartphone completely and get a cheap payg phone/sim.

You might get another high bill yet, as data roaming abroad is not usually billed in real time.

She's been there over a month and it never occurred to her that she would be paying huge roaming charges? Why didn't she just buy a local PAYG SIM on arrival?
At 19 she is an independent adult, if you keep bailing her out she's never going to achieve responsibility for he own finances.

The op has already stated that the daughter will be repaying the money.

As the DD comes from the parent's account the bill is probably also in their name so not 'bailing them out' temporarily would probably result in a default for the parent!

Spoke to Vodafone yesterday so total cost is £2500 at the moment - hopefully no more! ;)

You're right on both counts....with a great credit history I don't want to risk a default notice - she knows it was a very expensive mistake - and was totally devastated when she found out!

Thanks macman - we've never bailed her out - she's worked since she was 16 - part time and before her trip full time and saved £6500 to pay for it herself....hindsight is a wonderful thing - foresight even better! :rotfl:

Fine... But if she's worked since 16, and apparently earning good money, why are you still paying her mobile bill (I don't mean the 2.5K, but the regular monthly 'normal' bill). She can have her own contract mobile from 18.
