Unlocking a wireless router? (So I can use it for new broadband supplier)

Hi all,
How easy is it to unlock a wireless router? I am thinking of switching my Internet supplier to Plusnet £6.49 with no contract.
With, if its ADSL and Unlocked then there is no charge. But otherwise its £40 for a new router.
So I was thinking about unlocking one from current supplier. Good idea? Has anyone done it?
Or does anyone know of a better, cheaper option?

Some folks manage to flash routers with new firmware.
I'm aware that its been done with the older Netgear routers used by Sky.
if you can quote the ISP, make and model of your router someone may be able to help.
if you are with Sky then https://www.skyuser.co.uk is a useful site. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Otherwise perfectly good ADSL routers (Netgear DG834G for example) are available on eBay for about £10 upwards. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Who is your current supplier? Many just provide standard routers but customise the software on the CD that comes with it so all you have to do is change the login details on the router for the ADSL.0

AFAIK only Sky and BT lock their routers?
Plusnet's are customised, but can be flashed to remove the lock, they can then be used on any ADSL service.
You could easily pick up an ex Plusnet router on eBay if you wanted. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
