No. Nothing is stopping you doing that at all. What would it achieve?0 -

You'd be told that the envelope was empty. If you wanted to press further you'd need to ask whoever wrote you the cheque to get a photocopy back from their bank to confirm it had been paid from their account, and where to. From there it could be traced.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

The envelopes and their receipts usually say on them that the deposit of the contents is subject to checking by the bank. I've not seen any Santander envelopes but those of other banks do say this. It's there for precisely this reason.
Technically this sort of thing, where the bank hasn't checked the money, isn't a receipt as such - they cannot confirm receipt of something they have not checked, and indeed if the receipt is something you've written on something you tore off an envelope they can't confirm that either. In such a case it is doubtful the bank would consider it proof of anything, except that that envelope physically existed (and even then there's a chance it didn't go into the machine...)
If you put the money in an envelope and put the envelope in a machine, and the machine gave you a printed "receipt" (as presumably happened with the OP), that doesn't confirm anything either - as far as the bank is concerned, all it tells them is that you put something in their machine. Possibly even nothing. Which is more useful than the Santander method but not by much.urs sinserly,

Being identical to the methods of ALL the other banks in this respect...Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

And? You wouldn't get any.0 -
Thanks for all the replies. It was definitely £1200.00, First Direct have asked HSBC to investigate.
The whole thing's made me sick, and I will NEVER use a deposit machine again...
Will keep you informed.0 -
Had similar problem with these awful machines.
Damn thing crashed halfway through my deposit, money went in, manchine went dead.
All got sorted eventually but took several phone calls.
Hate using any kind of automated service.0 -
Just had a response saying the deposit was checked by two members of staff and was only £1100 etc...
I have eight weeks to respond otherwise they'll consider the matter closed!
I have responded of course, my £100.00 i somewhere in that bank, and I want it back.
Still feeling mighty sick about this...0 -
I am a little confused by all this because I haven't been to any HSBC branch whereby they still use the old type machines? Every branch I have been to (although not everywhere in the country) has an electronic one whereby you put your card in, you put your money in and you confirm the amount deposited....0
