Tyres

My tyres are in need of replacing soon, fronts are just under 3mm and rears just under 4mm, I did swap them around last year but looks like I did it a bit too soon!

I do a lot of motorway miles and so economy was quite important when I chose the current Michelin Primacy HP tyres but I still want something that is good in other areas - the Michelins have returned 56mpg since I bought them compared to 52mpg from the previous tyres and I've done nearly 50k on them so overall good.

If I choose Michelins again that's going to cost me around £85 a corner (Costco isn't cheapest at £87) and I'll probably just replace the two that are down to 2-3mm and see if I can get another few months out of the rears - I assume it's safer to put the older tyres on the front.

I'm also considering Hankook as these are £15 a corner cheaper and had good reviews in the recent Auto Express tyre tests. I'm not talking just about economy here either as they came out 4th overall including wet weather ability. I know that it's unlikely that I'll get 50k miles out of these as I have with the Michelines but at 20% less cost price if they do 20% less than 50k then it works out the same.

Anyone got any experience of Hankook?

Cheapest budget tyres are £55 a corner fitted, Tigar Prima 1, but I'm not going to touch those!

Car is a Mondeo estate, tyres are 205 55 16 V.

I've searched various tyre suppliers and mytyres.co.uk appear to be the most competitive.

Any comments?

  • Have a look at the BF Goodrich stuff... Either Profilers or G Grips.

Michelin and Goodrich are all I use.... Goodrich are Michelin owned. Had excellent past and current experience with using BF Goodrich with Two of my cars are all Goodrich all round and One is 50/50 with Primacys and G Grips.. I do a lot of Miles and they wear just slightly quicker than the Primacys..

I could not find Profilers in 205/55/16 this last time which is why I ended up on G-Grips... But so far I'm impressed. IRC they were just over £48 fitted local...
  • My Mistake they were £58 not £48... £48s were the Goodrich in a smaller size on one of the other cars....

A Previous post... With Prices back in Novemeber.
I'm thinking the same... The price difference warrants maybe less mileage being acheived over the tyres life with the Kumho but still breaking even on a cost per mile but I want the performance throughout the life of the tyre like I've experienced with the Primacys and Goodrichs..

So I've priced the 3 this morning again and I'm going Goodrich.

    Mich Primacy HP at £78
    Kumho at £55
    Goodrich G-Grips at £58

I've never used the G-Grips but have had excellent wear from Profiler2's in the past on the Mercedes I had... they matched everything the Pilots did. My Other Vectra is on Profiler 2s allround aswell... that fitment being based on how well they performed on the Mercedes...

    Look at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/
Here you can find what other people use on your type of car, and also what they think, how long they lasted etc.

Have Costco put up their prices?

The Lakeside branch still has 205/55/16 up for just under £84. Same price for Primacy or Energy.
I went into Elite fir four tyres Vredestien Sportrac 3's today. They had sold the last stock yesterday, everybody must have been waiting for payday at the end of the month, lol.

I decided that since my car is nearing the end of its life i would break the habit of several years and put on budgets.

Got 4x Sava Intensa HP fitted and balanced for £239:76.

I think they are made by Goodyear, anyway they feel comfy enough but i am not expecting performance like the previous Toyo Proxes or a Michelin.

I will report back as they get older.

I have Hankooks on my car. Can't fault them, I paid just under £70 a corner for 225 45 R17's but that was supply only, I then got my mate to fit them.

Anyway, good in the Dry, Wet and seem to be wearing ok.

Michelins are obviously more expensive and I do check prices in Costco. They are for sure not as cheap as they used to be!

Avon tyres are also a good compromise.

I had looked at Hankooks but they were out of stock and also were £70 odd aswell.

There was actually hardly any tyres other than premiums to be honest. I was tempted to get Toyo Proxes again but at almost £78 they were out of my current budget which to get 4 tyres today meant i had to stay below £70 a tyre, as it turns out i have stayed below £60.

I personally like the Avon ZZ tyres and Goodyear NCTs both seem to be very hard wearing and bring a consistent mpg.

I had the same situation as David. Needed 2 new tyres for the car I gave my Mum - 205/55/16's which was fitted with Primacy HP's. I dithered about changing brands, but whatever I bought it had to be a premium brand. I discussed it with the tyre suppliers at Elite and they recommended I stick with the Primacys on the basis of the low wear rate and that putting a new set on would transform the car anyway.

Yeah, was indeed a pity, as the Vred's were very well priced, just under £65, a bargain for a decentish tyre if you ask me.

These Sava's seem to be a fairly soft tyre, fairly compliant over rough tarmac, I doubt they will last as well as a Michelin or grip like a Toyo, but I wanted to put four on at the same time, as I like to keep my tyres matched up.

As the Sava brand is made by a company owned by Goodyear I reckon they should be OK.

    Better than Wanli's !!!! Hopefully.
