Are Smart meters coming for everyone?

The governments aim is that all will have them by 2020. BG have already started rolling them out and if you`re on energysmart you`ll be `the first to know about smart meters.`

As said above every home will have them but British Gas is fitting I believe about 200,000 over the next year or so.

Anyone getting a visit from one of BG's engineers fitting these smart meters is likely to get the hard sell on loads of other BG products and services from what I heard while staying at the same hotel as the training course they were on in Colchester a couple of months back...

Just dont get suckered in by their sales pitch..

That sales pitch just may be good money and energy saving advice you know. I also find it hard to believe that an engineer will be geared up for giving the `hard sell`.

Sales pitches are rarely money saving advice in my experience.

I overheard several converstions over breakfast and in the bar in the evenings that certainly made it sound like there would be a hard sell, talk of doubling their money if they could sign a few people up to boilercover each day and one guy saying he wasnt expecting a whole day of sales training on a course about fitting smart meters..

But as you say, im sure its all good moneysaving advice... :rotfl:

You would be surprised at what the promise of a good commission will do.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

You may or may not be surprised to learn that I work in field sales for BG. I knock on peoples doors and provide them with advice which saves them energy and money. And my earnings rely on the sales which I make.

Believe it or not, there are some of us out there who do provide customers with good advice which allows them to make an informed decision (as you`ll see from the information that I`ve provided in this thread).

    I'm not.

Like telling people that they can reduce their usage by 12% just by being on energysmart? :rotfl:

You say advice, I say sales pitch. Do you sign people up to websaver tariffs? Surely thats the best advice you can give people to save money as thats BG's cheapest tariff?

What if the customer doesn`t have internet access or doesn`t want to manage the account online? Or perhaps they don`t want a long term contract. Is websaver still the best?

Every customer is different which is why you need to discuss their requirements rather than tell them they should be on a particular tariff. That would sound like a `hard sell` in my book.

So of course you would advise them that they will get the best rate by managing their account online (or getting a relative or friend to do it if they are in the minority who don't have internet access), and that the best deals are on 12m contracts and paying by monthly DD?
That is what you do, isn't it?
