If I were you I'd go for the websaver as its cheaper and go buy an energy monitor, you can pick up basic ones for under £20 (Owl micro or something like that)

The energysmart tariff is just a bit gimmicky to me, you may as well be on the cheapest and get your own energy monitor, I'm sure Martin has got an article that comes to the same conclusion..

Have a look around the forums to see if you can find a free one from somewhere, occasionally the energy companies give them away.

You dont have to use the meter. They sent me three meters not one of them worked (it was a different meter to the one they show on web site now). Funny my owl meter I got before hand works fine.

I just send BG my meter readings which you have to anyway via web site every month. They do prompt you via email too

The meter is a gimmick as said but energysmart is just a method on how you get billed, is not a tariff as such

Websaver 12 will give a 6 % discount on both gas and elec until the end of Sept 2012 but there is no energysmart.

You could go for the Discount Saver with will track the BG standard tariff and give a 4% discount till Oct 2012 and is energysmart compatible.

BG say that using energysmart correctly and following their ongoing advice throughout the term, it will reduce your spend by 12%.

So yes, websaver 12 is the cheapest but energysmart would possibly help lower the consumption.

If you do go for websaver, it might be worth checking ebay for BG energy monitors as they are not normally too expensive and would probably be cheaper than a new one from a super market.

Although, if you are buying one, I personally wouldnt get a BG branded one, I've read lots of posts about them not working (as savemoney says a few posts up)

Before I got my Smart meters I used one with energy smart. It helped me mainly as my meter was on the floor and with a bad back I couldn't see easily to monitor my consumption. All I needed to do was get a relative to check the meter once a month for me. In January I got a rebate from my electricity account having reduced my consumption by a third being more aware of what was using the electric.

A staff member also tested one and his meter was 10 floors down from his flat. The reieving unit still picked up the info.

Now I have my Smart meters I don't even have to get someone to read it for me as it gives the reading on the monitor which I have positioned at eye level.:T.

Saw them on sale at COSTCO yesterday, but did not notice the price.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Are Smart meters coming for everyone?
