I've been looking for flight to Rome end of August. I checked this out but by the time you add in luggage and all the add on's the prices are not cheap. I find Ryanair's marketing really bad and a complete waste of time. It just puts me off even checking their prices as I know it will be more expensive in the long run. I think the lesson is that there are very few cheap deals to be had from any of these low cost airlines. :)

I agree with DocN. I'll share my experience with you all and then you can make up your own mind. 3 years ago we flew from Prestwick to Gothenberg and then took the ferry to Denmark to visit my brother and his wife. Outgoing was fine apart from the little sergeant major who made by sister and myself put our handbags into our hand luggage, then when we got through we were able to take them out again and no other person complained about a small personal bag. Didn't know the point of that exercise! The problem occurred on the return journey. We were meant to fly at 5pm and by 9 pm the messages came on the screen that the 3 flights which were due to leave that evening had all been cancelled. We stood in a queue for 2 hours (there were at least 3 queues) and they told us we MIGHT get on a flight the following Thursday (this was a Friday we were due to fly) so almost a whole week. I had to get back to work for the Monday so we had to get family back home to work at getting us (my husband, myself and my sister) back home. My niece who had worked in the travel industry told us to get a letter from Ryanair to state why the plane could not fly which we did but most people would not know to do this so please remember to ask if this ever happens to you. They do not generally fly from main airports, so after our family managed to get us new travel arrangements, Ryanair would not pay for the taxi to take us to the main international airport in Gothenburg. It cost £50 and I think if was around half an hour away. We had to sit in the airport all through the night to get a new flight at 6 am which was then to take us to Copenhagen and a change of planes from Copenhagen to Manchester at a cost of £104 each. We then had to take a train from the airport into the centre of Manchester and another train to Glasgow where my niece collected us to take us home. It was an absolute nightmare. I wrote to Ryanair to ask for them to pay for our journey knowing full well that they wouldn't. They only refunded the one way part of our journey which was roughly £17 each. Between our calls to my home telephone, my sons calls to us discussing the new travel arrangements and my sister's to her daughter's mobile phone, our 'cheap' flights cost us dear. It was also incredibly stressful. By the time you claim your travel insurance and deduct your excess for each person and the fact that they do not pay for any extra food/liquid expenses you are well out of pocket. Also my husband and my sister had Post Office insurance which was very good. I was using my RBOS Royalties Premier insurance and they paid out £86 less than the other 2 insurances as they did not cover part of the claim and I can't remember now what it was without looking at my paperwork. I did read recently that if a travel company lets you down they are duty bound to pay for a hotel for you until they can get you on a flight home. I did ask for that and they said no. It looks as if Ryanair can do what they like. Rules are made to be broken by some companies. Anyway that was our very stressful experience. We, personally, would NEVER fly with Ryanair again no matter how cheap (and also the safety factor that DocN states) as we would not take the risk of being dumped again. I know many people will just take the chance. If it hasn't happened to you, you don't know what a certain situation actually feels like until it does. You can make up your own mind if you are willing to take a chance. :(

Your experience is sadly typical of what happens to Ryanair customers when things go wrong. They dump you, and they don't even try to help.

You might just save a few quid when you fly with them (though even that may now be unlikely because of all the extras) but if things go wrong (and they do) it could easily cost you several hundred pounds to sort out the mess.

    EXACTLY!

I fly both Ryanair and EasyJet and always find very cheap deals - it pays to trawl for a few days and book well in advance.
Cheap = well under half the cost of the cheapest main airline flights, all in.

Never buy food or drink from them, only ever take carry-on luggage, never book a priority seat etc.

I think the people complaining here probably are simply scared of online check-in.

Not remotely. It's not online check-in that's the problem, but the real and proven risk of what happens to you if Ryanair cancel your flight.

It happens, and if it happens to you you've got serious and expensive problems because, unlike most other airlines, Ryanair will do little if anything to help you. See ailey's post above if you don't believe me, but you'll find other examples all over the net.

I have used Easyjet a few times a few years ago and never had any problems but the first and only time I flew return with Ryanair I had the problem of our return flight being cancelled in Gothenberg and just left with the possibility of getting on a flight 6 days later (as explained on Page 1 Item number 12. Just totally abandoned by Ryanair! We had to get home due to work commitments.

Also if anyone is travelling for a week they cannot just take hand luggage with them as quoted by Sirbrainy as clean clothes are required, more than what would fit into hand luggage. I am not scared of online check-in, who would be and why?

As DocN states, the problem is when your flights are cancelled and they do not offer an alternative. We were abandoned in an airport which was very small and closed at 12 midnight so no-one could even sleep over in the airport. A very dangerous situation for some who had no money for a hotel or for organising another flight. Where do people in that situation go to sleep and keep themselves safe overnight. They were left in a very vulnerable situation. Did Ryanair care? In a word "No". I have shared my experience as an example to all of what can actually happen. If it has never happened to you, then you're lucky but when it does, I'm sure, like me, you will never fly with Ryanair again. Everyone hopes it will never happen, but rest assured, it will for many of you.

it really depends on where u r going and how long. obviously u take a risk - this can be said with all airlines.
i fly cheap as i visit my parents place in spain or lanzarote - take handluggage as we have washing machine access - to be honest didnt really need it for a week when its v.hot lol
i wouldnt fly with them if i had to change somewhere, or a long flight over 6 hours or if i had to be somewhere at a particular time.

i also someotimes book one suitcase that we all share

if you dont like them, dont fly with them simple really. but when we post deals it would be great not to have all the negative comments if you do not actually use them anymore. i am quite happy to see the cheap prices and am gutted after reading this post as my flights booked already are now £60 cheaper each now

As to risk, it's not the same with all airlines. Most of them will look after you properly (including EasyJet) - Ryanair won't.

As to negative comments, sorry, but this is a discussion forum. People with bad experiences of Ryanair are quite entitled (and very welcome) to express a view, just as are those with positive experiences.

If you're planning to go with Ryanair, it's important to know what risks you're taking. ;)

You don't seem to know that you could have gone to the nearest hotel and stayed there, eating & drinking & getting your clothes cleaned etc...at Ryanair's cost :D:D:D:D:D
