You need to find a new repairer. The whole point about a desktop PC is that everything is modular and replaceable. It may not have been economically repairable if a major component had failed (for example the motherboard). But if it is not powering up at all (no lights, no fans, no disk spin-up), then it's possibly just a failed PSU-which is a £20 part that takes 20 minutes to fit. If it won't boot but powers up, it's most likely either a fault with the hard drive or a corrupted OS-both eminently repairable.
He didn't offer to dispose of it for you, did he?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Yes! he did so I don`t have it. Motherboard sounds familiar, he did say wasn`t worth repairing and I have my stuff on the hard drive he did that for me.0

Call me a cynic, but then I suspect that he has repaired that and sold it on for a very nice profit. Even if it was the mobo, unless it was a very old machine it was easily replaceable, even more so if it was just the PSU.
What was the make and model? Someone can check what the mobo would have cost.
If he was able to copy over your data then presumably not hard drive failure. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
He did say it was ready for scrap! It was Hp slimline 3631uk0

Just a point but I bought a slimline Acer with an I3 chip last year and it is a great machine. Really quick, from switch on to surfing is around 15 seconds. Only downside was no Blu ray drive. Please remember other opinions are available.0

Hi thanks,
I looked at those in comet £329? but then I would have to buy a wirless thingie which were £25`sh as my router is downstairs. So works out at similar price to a new HP one like the one that `died`, but newer model and has AMD not i3. I`m brain dead with it all (10% offer I found on HP finishes tomorrow but I suppose a new one will turn up soon if I don`t decide tonight)0 -
The Slimline 3631 mobo is available on eBay starting at around £65. So a repair cost of £100 up would have been feasible. That's assuming that it was the motherboard, and not something much easier to fix...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi
Never mind, not got the broken one so need to find something that will do the job..because typing on this laptop is horrible (just don`t like them) and I miss by big screen.
I would like another small one, but if a larger one comes along at a good price (that will make the dinner as well) then I`ll definitely consider it.
The Dell one does look lovely (in the different colours) but my last experience of dealing with them and endless calls to India did my my head in!
Anyone please feel free to throw any suggestions of ones worth looking at my way.. have decided not going to rush into it as would if poss like to buy one that works for longer than a couple of years.
Thanks as always I really appreciate everyones help.0 -
In the meantime, why don't you just connect your original monitor to the laptop, so that at least you have a decent sized display? You can also buy a separate keyboard for just a few pounds if you want.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
