    Looks like May 09 was the time to buy a house on that chart. I wonder how long it will be before we see those prices again? ARe people willing to put their lives on hold for years and years just so they can 'own' a pile of bricks for a few years before they drop dead? Idiots.

    Not well. It was always a risk and I wish I had listened to the bears on this forum. Property is a poor investment and one that I cannot get out of very easily.

    Thanks. I should have listened to you and the other bears. Property is not a good investment. I should have rented and put my money into a ballanced portfolio of shares and bonds.

    Not to be pedantic but don't many people buy so they can get on with their lives? ie settling down having kids etc. Pretty sure I've heard others on on here complaining/implying that the insecurity of renting is offputting in that regard.

    Also, I think you grossly overstate the 'drag' owning a house is on many - For example if I wanted to go around the world for a year, then the difference between the mortgage I pay (£600 p/m) and the rental I would make (approx 2k p/m) would probably pay for me to do so. :cool:

    A non hypothetical example of this is two freinds (a couple) who went to Japan in 2008/9 for 12 months. They both had flats in London They both rented them out and they both made a very nice suplimentary income.

    ....But hey, if you aren't really living until you are a Gold star member of the Pickfords preferred customer club then renting your whole life in the UK is probably the way forward....

    I have already said that buying property in order to rent it out is a good investment, as long as it is a part of a mixed and balanced portfolio of investments. It's the whole buying a house to live in that I think is a waste of money. Try to keep up. Idiot.
