EDF bill rip-off

Have been reading my electric meter for nearly 60 year and the rubbish EDF come out with would not have been tollerated by folks a few years ago. My daughter in law and son are out at work all day, wood burning stove heats water and radiators, cook by gas. The electricity bill doubled from January from £40 too over £80 all bills estimated and meter readings phoned through - last bill nearly £100 for a month. As I used to live in the house I know how much electric is used - less than I used when I lived there! Have had similar probs with EDF where I live - they started putting up my DD payments then had to bring them down. Latest was my electric hike by EDF. an elderly lady living alone - mostly in one room with gas heater, cook by gas, no T.V. only computer, lighting, fridge freezer and freezer £55 a month up from £30 bills all estimated. Had phoned in meter readings.
EDF told me they assess monthly payments twice a year and adjust payments according to use. Payment have always been assessed by energy companies, once a year around June, allowance is made for seasonal adjustment so that payments remain the same throughout the year. When over payment is above a given amount, after assessment in June, customer can ask for a repayment.
I was very surprised, from my own experiance, at EDF there seems to be little or no concern for elderly and disabled people. I was asked to put up my payments to £55 a month at the beginning of the year as my electricity had increases - must be the electic blanket I put on for half an hour before going to bed. Now use a hot water bottle, have arthritis for which I can do with a little warmth. Have now changed suppliers and will work out my electricity needs, with the help of my new electric company, to ensure I am warm and comfortable this winter using electric I can afford - still gas for heating.
I'm not appologising, EDF are not a reliable company!0 -

Point of semantics: A Spanish power company called Scottish Power. It really annoyed me when the BBC filed the story in their "Scottish News" section. That's just completely failing to do your research...
Forestlands: Is the doubling in cost just from last year to this year, or is it from a few years back? As I would immagine that prices have come fairly close to doubling over the last 5 or 6 years so that could be the reason if it's over a slightly longer period...I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0 -
I have just received an electricity bill & am surprised to note that, according to their estimates, my electricity usage has gone from 8.14 units a day (at the old price...) to 14.42 units a day (at the new prices).
This suggests that my usage has virtually doubled per day since moving onto the Standard tariff on 1st April. Like the OP I consider this to be highly unlikely.
I have just emailed EDF but has anyone else had any luck with contesting EDF's arbitrary Estimated Reading on 1st April?
(To EDF - ''This is a total of 623 units used and I would suggest that these should be fairly distributed across the 65 days of supply - 9.58 units per day. Therefore 16 days = 153 units and 49 days = 469.4 units.'' This also tallies with their view of my usage this quarter last year which was 9.4 per day)
(I have Actual for March and Customer for June).
(And yes, I am now kicking myself for not taking a reading myself on 1st April as I was well aware that my fixed term was up and was researching new tariffs - though only got round to actually applying two weeks ago...)0
