They must generate a lot of phone traffic so I don't understand why B.T. can't develop some sort of phone spam filter to block them, but then they get call revenue from it so I suppose I answered my own question.

And exactly how would BT filter these calls?

How on earth would BT know which call was from a scammer and which was aunty Madge from Australia calling to wish you a happy birthday?

It would be a bit like standing you at the side of a busy road and asking you stop the cars being driven by rapists, pedophiles and people who don't send their mum a birthday card!

They're all out there somewhere but they're the devil to spot.

  • i've had several of the "microsoft windows" calls, the last one they caught me in a really bad mood and i proceded to call them every name under the sun and also question his pearantage and what his mother did for a living (hint it involved sailors and a donkey).
after that i got 7-8 call backs from the same guy telling me i was a nasty man and his mother was a saint to which i just hung up....made me feel a whole lot better after the bad day i was having :D

BT and the other phone companies could very easily put an end to these calls if they wanted to.

All they need to do is stop selling blocks of overseas call time at prices that make the scams financially viable. If they paid the same as the rest of us, then the scammers would soon move-on!

So all those people with friends and relatives living outside the UK should pay more for their calls just to stop the scammers? That doesn't seem very reasonable to me.

These people are making a lot of money doing this, a lot of vulnerable people and a lot of people who don't know any better fall for this scam. It doesn't take many people handing over a couple of hundred pounds to make it very worthwhile even if they pay full rate for the calls.

Neither of you are making too much sense, the problem is that people do fall for it, the ones who can do anything to stop this are the credit card / debit card companies. Nothing any one can do if people use money transfer though.

  • Are there still people out there who fall for these scams? Beware your pc can be a weapon for the Internet pondlife who lurk on the net do not give them a loaded gun, the will use it on you. I have received a few phone calls telling me I have a problem with my pc,how do they know I have a pc? I now wind them up by telling them I have'nt got a pc so how can it be that I have a problem and so how do they know.
