I'm to see my friends baby later on (ex-gf, not my child!) ...But no idea what gift to buy...MoneySaving style minus Primark or any other cheap outlet...Gift ideas please?
Budget , up to £30 maybe?
No to gift vouchers, and must be available on the high street

New Mums tend to be given loads of newborn clothes, so perhaps something for the next size up?
Or better yet, take a token gift for Mum this visit (something 'pampering' - a small box of luxury chocs maybe?). Then while you're with her, ASK what she still needs that you could bring next time, or how about offering £30 cash to start baby's first savings account? That is a very MSE gift!

I just had a baby and we got loads and loads of clothes and cuddly toys - all very cute and the clothes are really handy.
A couple of people got things for me (really nice toiletries, flowers) and one pressie I thought was nice was a really nice smelling soap/shampoo thing for the LO. I think I might do this next time I have to get something for a new baby. I myself get the usual baby stuff (as it's an everyday thing), but I know Weleda do some nice baby stuff.0 -
A big box of nappies & some baby wipes.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

Why don't you register below (on the MSE e-mail) and get £10 off £20 in Mamas and Papas. You can print off the voucher and use instore. A baby blanket in blue or pink is something I would have liked.

ETA the nicest thing someone brought me when I had our baby was a homemade lasagne. It meant we had a lovely dinner without any hassel. We live 20 minutes drive from the nearest takeaway, so it was very appreciated.0 -
When I had my son lots of people brought clothes which was great but all small sizes so he quickly outgrew them. A really nice, practical present i recieved was from 2 girlfriends who made like a baby hamper... it was a small pop up style kids laundry basket from ikea (which i still use for all his washing) filled with baby essentials... nappies, wipes, dummys, bubble bath, sudocreme, shampoo, etc. Came in really handy and still have some of it left
You could get a nice basket, put pink or blue ribbons on and fill it with baby essentials... maybe a wee treat for mummy too such as a nice bubble bath so she can relax 0 -
When I had mine I had some lovely gifts - but one of my friends turned up with a present for me and not the baby, she said she knew I would get loads of stuff for the baby so she treated me instead
It was a lovely gesture and I was really touched, it was a silver bracelet that I still wear and it reminds me of that time
I don't know if it might be innappropriate for you to get your ex something instead but worth bearing in mind£608.98

when my daughter was born we were given lots of clothes, teddies, photo frames etc but my partners auntie gave us a wicker basket filled with all sorts of practical things (many of which we'd forgotten to buy).
she arranged everything nicely in the basket (which we used to store nappies afterwards - added bonus), she put in baby bath, shampoo, soap, a pack of wash cloths, cotton wool, dummy, scratch mittens, socks, a small teddy, gripe water, teether, all sorts of great things and we really appreciated the practicality of it.
all in you could prob do a very full basket for about £20 + a trip to boots/superdrug!!0 -
Thank you for all your lovely suggestions!! Seems to me though that perhaps if everyone buys clothes etc, it's a bit too cliche... Then maybe the £30 savings account idea sounds excellent, obviously I wouldn't be able to open a savings account for the newborn would I? I don't know if I trust to give her £30 cash to actually open one , lol0
