if it doesn't fit to the wall socket maybe the wall socket is faulty, sometimes the metal connector can be pushed back inside the box a little and the aerial won't connect properly, there shouldn't be a different type of socket there

its proberly the type extension, maybe its supposed to connect to the tv end of an aerial cable to the actual tv.
what i do know is that the tv socket is different to the aerial socket by the size.

there's only a couple of types of cable and socket, so either you have a satellite connection or a coax one, if it's coax there are two adapters, male and female, if they don't work maybe the wall socket isn't for a tv, i would take the cover off the wall box and see what's inside you should see the female coax socket or whatever is carrying the aerial signal, then you can figure out what cable is needed

just realised the aerial extension cable that i brought was fine for the tv socket but was too loose for the aerial wall socket so i'm guessing i need 2 different cable ends, any idea what these would be called or is it just male/female ?

They are called Belling Lees...as I stated above. They only come in one industry standard size.(9.5mm)
Coax,or Co Axial is the name often given to aerial cables, although it can also be called CATV.

OP - I take it the house actually does have a TV aerial connected to the the faceplate, or an aerial leading to a distribution amplifier that's connected to all the faceplates?

all our rooms have aerials with a plug socket
Can you plug the lead in in another room. If it fits elsewhere your wall socket may be damaged.
